Powder choice for 6-250AI

Need advise on powder for 6-250 ai
Right now my load is
H4350
90gr sst
Lapua 6 Creedmoor brass neck sized( currently fire forming)
CCI SR primer

20 inch barrel, 1:10 twist. Rifle is grouping, not complaining about that at all. I am currently getting 3080FPS, thought it would be faster than that. Load with h4350 is on the warm side, flattened primer, no other signs yet, just worried the load is on the max and my son is hunting with it this year.

Case isn't near full, and speed seems low to me, was expecting a little better with no pressure signs. Is there a different powder you would try? Or am I just being limited to a short barrel and lower speed.

I think that your short barrel is where you are losing a lot of velocity, I have a buddy with a 6 creedmore & 20 inch barrel shooting 87 grain vmax, only gets about 3050fps out of it also

To get more case fill, go to a slower powder like H4831SC. The short barrel is a problem velocity wise. My 6XC 20 in hunting rifle is a lot slower than my 28 and 30 inch competition rifles. I dont remember the actual number.

The list I have only shows the 95 gr. SST bullet from Hornady.

20 inch barrel, 1:10 twist.

This contributes to the fact that not all of your powder burns in this shorter barrel. The slightly slower powders or worse, H-4831SC, will lose a bit more velocity and be even more disappointing from lack of burning.

I've been working with the 6x47 Lapua and the 6xc using the Nosler 90 gr. E-tips. Neither are Ackley shoulders but I'm running them in either a 20" or 22" barrels for shorter hunting rifles.

Generally speaking, I've been using Re-16 or Re-17 for all top end loads. The Re-16 is usually somewhere around 3130 and the Re-17 is right about 3200. These are accuracy loads not velocity pushes. My zero is 200 yards with 1,000 ft/lbs at 400 yards.

Personally I'd be looking at a different powder and check which bullet I want to use.

Enjoy the process!

:)

RE17 will likely give you the most velocity. But, if you can find some H100v, it's worth trying.

It shoots very well in my 22-250 AI and 6mm AI.

100V is a great powder just not in this example. It's too slow and doesn't all burn in a short barrel. It is cool burning though which a plus when shooting higher volumes.

;)

This is my powder of choice in my 6 Rem AI, low es and s.d. with a 90 gr. TGK

My experience with a 20" Savage in 308 vs a 24" Howa shooting 168gr MatchKings showed that the shorter barrel gave better velocities and a reduction of fireball with faster burning powders.
IE.
The 24" had faster velocities with H4350 & RL17, while the 20" did better with Varget & RL15.

I'm running Alliant Varmint in straight 250 Savage with 90gr BlitzKings.

IMR 4350 42 Grains With the short 20 inch barrel you will need to stay with a fast burning powder All you will get with slow burning powders is muzzle blast and bullet disruption when it leaves the barrel
