Powder choice for 30 Nosler?

Thaught

Silver $$ Contributor
Building a 30 Nosler and plan to shoot 215s or 205s Bergers. Barrel will be 22” and will also have 9” suppressor. Will Retumbo or N570 be too slow of a powder with only 22”

I would say the best way to determine that is to shoot it in low light conditions and see how much muzzle flash you get. If is acceptable to you go for it.

I have a 30-28 and shoot H1000 suppressed from a 26-inch. I am playing with the idea of a 22-inch. In looking at Quickload and muzzle pressures from a 22-inch, I decided I would stick with H1000 if I do this. The muzzle pressure from N570 in a 22-inch is close to 20 ksi. H1000 is around 15 ksi and Retumbo a little above the H1000. N570 might work well and will certainly give you better speeds, but be a sure and check with your suppressor manufacturer to make sure your device is rated for 20 ksi if you plan to try it. That is HIGH.

Interested to know the purpose of your build.

N570 is a very slow powder. In general, slow burning powders need sufficient barrel length 24 to 26" to achieve the full capability of the high powder volume cartridge selected.

I never understood why anyone would select a magnum cartridge in a rifle with a short barrel. In general, one ends up burning a lot of powder without meaningful results, e.g., getting 308 to 30 06 performance from a 30-caliber magnum with a short barrel.

But then again, I am not expert on magnums, I never owned one, nor will I ever.

N-570 works great in one of my 300 winmags with 208 - 230 gr. projos... so I don't see any reason why it wouldn't work in the 30 Nosler that has several grains more capacity.

Retumbo is a safe bet too.

I think there is a 28 nosler pistol on here somewhere, surprising velocity for a short barrel.
Would be interesting to compare a 300wsm or 300prc to the 30 nosler in a 22" barrel.

Forgot to mention... This 300winmag barrel had tons of freebore allowing me to fill the case more than standard SAAMI spec.

So if you're hunting with this rifle and your magazine is 3.500"ish. I think RETUMBO would be my first choice.

If you were to use anything heavier than 220 gr. I had my best results with RL-33. That's when I was shooting the no longer made 240 SMK. Once RL-33 came out I gave it a try and I thought it was beyond amazing.

N570 or Retumbo should work fine. I understand the short barrel choice when using a suppressor, you’ll give up some velocity but by the time you screw a 7-9 suppressor on a 24-26 inch barrel it’s get to be a very very barrel, inconvenient to say the least. I’ve been using a Saum and a 6.5 PRC with shorter 20” barrels for the same reason, after adding the thunderbeast its still out at 27”. I have longer barreled magnums I can use when I need too. Good luck!

@FeMan
Did you go through with the 22” 30-28 nosler? I’m planning to the same. Currently running 205 EH/ H1000 @ 3090 fps in a 26”, the 215 Hybrids tuned there as well. Curious as to what bullets you are running, velocity where it tuned and where you hit pressure.

I have not chambered a shorter barrel and probably wont. My motivation was to get the length down, but the rifle is almost impossible for me to spot my shots in this lighter weight hunting rifle suppressed at 26 inches and the 22 would be worse. I ordered a TB Magnus SR, which I hope tames the recoil much better. It should be here any day now. If it does tame things down to the point where I can spot my shots, then I might stay suppressed for hunting and look into a shorter barrel. If not, I'll go with my MBM brake.

I have loads for both 215 and 205 hybrids. Both shoot under 0.2 moa both have tuned at just under 3,000 fps using H1000. Hope that helps.

Sounds like we’re after the same goal. I have a Magnus K-RR on order. Hoping to be as effective as brake without the percussion. I’ve steered away from suppressors due long recoil impulse, hearing the K-RR feels more like a brake.
