Twist rate/bullet combo

Thaught

Silver $$ Contributor
Shooting a 30 Nosler with .200” FB. Having a hard time getting this rifle to group and to display a low ES. Currently shooting 215 Bergers. Started using N570, then switched to H1000. There is an improvement, but not where I’d like it to be. Thinking about trying the 205 gr Elite Hunter bullets. My barrel is 1-9” twist. Thoughts? Maybe this rifle doesn’t like the 215s?

Any time there is a question about the spin rate stability of a bullet, you can get an impression of how it falls on this scale. This is an arbitrary stability factor equation worked out long ago that takes some user inputs and spits out a number.

When using the Berger Bullets, you can often find the bullet is in the drop-down menu. Not all of them are listed, but the dimensions are not hard to find from scratch if you do a little homework.

Sometimes a gun doesn't like a particular cartridge recipe because it is unstable due to spin rate, but sometimes even when that falls in a good range it still doesn't like the combination. If it were always easy, this would be a very skinny forum page...

Your 215s should be fine in a 1:9 twist out of a 30 Nosler, at least with respect to twist rate. There are many other reasons it may or may not like them.

ES isn't the goal, its group size. If ES is under 20 you are in great shape. If it's under 30 you are still fine.

What are the groups and ES that you don't like?
