Powder choice / amount for .223 w/69-75gr bullet

hey guys, i just ordered a 223 with a 9 twist, 28" barrel. im hoping to shoot the 75 grain A-max, or maybe the sierra 69gr.

any suggestions on where to start testing this load will be greatly appreciated. my nosler loading manual only has test loads for 40-50-55gr bullets....

thanks,
jeremy

With 1-9", I would think 26" or 24" might get better result. In any rate, my AR likes 25.3g of RL15 pushing the 69g Sierra, I would start at 23.5 and work up.

The amount is hard to say. The charge your rifle will use safely is very dependent on the brass.
It also depends on the chamber, throat, and bore dimensions. Loads developed for a Colt AR-15 with a NATO standard chamber and throat will consistently blow primers in a tight chambered, short throated Krieger barrel,.217" land-land dimension).

Most medium burn rate powders work well with the .223 and heavier bullets. IMR-4895 can be used successfully with bullets weighing up to 80 grains, as can Varget, and a VERY long list of other powders.

You might try VV N540. I've had good luck with it. The newest data from VV for SMK 69gr 223 is reduced from VV data previously. Now I'm over MAX in my AR, before they chaged I was under MAX. Go figure?

24.7 grains of Reloder 15, Lake City cases, Federal 205M primers and 75 Amaxes work the bomb for me in an AR-15 service rifle.

Work up, yada, yada.........

75 grain Hornady BTHP bullet with 23.5 grains of Hogdon's Benchmark works well for me in my Remington PSS 223 with a 1 in 9 twist barrel.

I use 24 grs of RL-15 in Winchester cases with the Hornady 75 grain BTHP,2.26"). Same load works great with the Berger 75 grain VLD @ 2.365"
