powder burn

Shooting a 223 with 24.5 of Varget with a Berger 80.5 full bore bullet. What barrel length will burn all the powder before the bullet leaves the barrel? In other words what barrel length would be the optimal length?

I don't know the answer but if it shoots teeny tiny, what difference does it make? I keep it within reason but stopped worrying with that stuff a long time ago. That and fill rate too, mostly. Again, within reason.

Not being an arse, just real about it. I only care how it shoots but you may have a different reason for climbing into that rabbit hole.

My bad! That is what I shot in my RRA 20" bull upper with a Wylde chamber. Single shot .010" off. Last time out I managed 6.5" at 800.

Powder that doesn't burnout and is ejected can affect the bullet by impacting the base/boa ttail which can create a yawing motion. So incomplete burnout can be an issue. QL and GRT do help in powder selection by allowing the reloader to see case fill and burnout which are contributors to minimizing dispersion.

Complete burnout is a goal but not achieving it doesn't mean it will create an issue. It is also part of a tradeoff between achieving a desired velocity and desired precision. It is a consideration in military rounds as the greater the unburned powder the more likely the powder to give excessive muzzle flash.
