Post office Thief

I went to return a scope to Optics planet. I was dropping it at the local PO and the box would not fit. There was a line for the window and it was not open yet. A guy offered to drop it for me when it opened. So I handed him the box and said "thanks". I honestly didn't think a thing about it.

Apparently, he stole it.

The package was never logged so I might be screwed.

People man. Get a receipt at the PO, every single time.

I’d actually see if they have video footage to provide to the cops. That is a federal physicality so I am assuming they do. Stealing mail is actually a federal crime and you should follow up. That is an expensive item as well

Like X said, postal inspectors love this stuff. Video is hard to beat.

Don't get in a panic yet. Happened to me when the lobby was open but not the counter. Custodian took my box. Never got scanned but it got there. All this guy did was drop it in the outgoing bag and no one at the counter scanned it. Give it a day or so then call planet optics and see it it arrived.

The post office has security cameras, they probably have his face on camera. File a police report. Also he might sell it at a pawn shop and he could be identified there also.

People are no damn good... that way when this happens you aren't surprised, and when it doesn't, it restores faith in people, and you feel good.

All that said, you must have forgotten about the people that follow UPS and FEDEX trucks to steal packages off porches.

Same experience here,Postal Inspector help is a myth . Been there,done that...not just once.

Not sure it's a federal crime. It never made it to the mail box or even into the post office. It was handed to someone. It's definitely theft but not sure it would pass as a federal crime. Taking mail from a mail box is a federal crime. Someone giving another person a package may fall a bit short. If there is video and it is released to LE for viewing, you still have a chance of getting back your scope. Sorry to hear of your misfortune. This kind of stuff is everywhere. Really sad but trust is almost a thing of the past.

Moving forward, most places don’t have valet parking anymore so when someone offers to park your car for ya - just say no thanks
