Possible new HG build

I may be getting together the components soon to build a new HG.

My specs for the build would be a Bat M 1.550 action with a 1.450 dia barrel chambered in a 6 Dasher.

I'd like some opinions on my stock choices. I'm looking at the McMillan 50 BR stocks and unsure if this with the rails installed is overkill or not. So I'm hoping to get some opinions from some whom may have worked with and used this stock either as a gunsmith or a competitor on how straight it is.

Next choice is the same stock but without the rails and half the cost.

Main concerns are straightness and tracking of the stocks mentioned and also since it's designed around the use of the 50 BMG sized actions will it work for the 1.550 dia Bat M action?

With that diameter action I myself would use the LBR stock and add aluminum rails and have the rear plate adjustible for tracking.

The hbr stock is very thick in the action area.

Thanks that's what I'm needing to know. Reason I'm seeking the HBR stock was also for the wider forend of 5" vs 3.5" on the LBR. So I'd also need to have a rail installed on the LBR? I like idea of having an adjustable rear rail that way it can be fine tuned to track straight.

Any other suggestions comments?

Id try to find a maxi tracker

I've yet to see a straight laminated stock. Every one I've had or owned has been twisted crooked and heck one could go as far as say bent. Ok maybe not that bad. I have a MBR stock by McMillan on my current HG and it tracks amazingly and returns right back to POA, my 2000.00 Leonard stocks don't even track that well. So that's a reason I'm looking into another McMillan but on a larger design

Don't all of the maxi trackers have barrel blocks?

I run a 5" plate on my LBR and it works well. I have never felt out gunned by a maxi tracker at 600 yards with a 6br improved. Any larger cailber I would definitely be looking at the maxi tracker.

Mine did and getting the correct torque is a pain to ensure the tune for the barrel.
I'd much rather have the action pillared and glued and with the M action there should be enough meat on it to hang a 1.450 barrel stress free.

If I was going to hang a 30 inch 1.45 inch barrel with no Barrel block I would do it on a 2-inch L Acton. Anything smaller and I would use a barrel block. I have always wanted a Shehane Maxitracker. They are no longer made but maybe could find a used one. Otherwise the big MacMillan would be great

Dont think a fiberglass stock will not warp. I have watched one track perfect as the sun came up and warmed one side the gun started to track to the right. Seems like once the wood laminate is trued up and sealed it holds pretty well. What ever you do make sure there is some form of adjustable plate front or rear so you can get it to track perfectly straight. I have never seen any stock track perfect without work done to it. I personally think your fine with an M action. I think Tom on here has a maxi tracker he may be willing to let go....

I believe the Maxi-Tracker's are still being made in laminate's. Just not in the aluminum version any more.

I have a 50HBR stock for my HG with 6" rail in front and I have a 1.750 diameter Bat B action in it and I love the stock and will be getting another one this year to build another HG. The one I have now does not have a barrel block and I have 1.250" barrels for it, the next one i get will be for a barrel block for 1.250 and 1.450 barrels to try something different.

If I were to do it all again, knowing what I do now, I would do it like Al Forbs does. He ran 2 ST 1000 Fiberglass stocks, a standard LG and one weighed up from Mcmillan with a 1.35 tube. It was under 30 LBS, but as a (breaked?) dasher recoil was a non issue for him. At Harris we ran LG and HG back to back, so he simply switched guns. No messing with different front and rear rests/bags. And he was always, in my mind, the one to beat at the Harris matches.

Don't get me wrong, I LOVE my 85 LB HG, but...well...it's an 85 pound gun!!

+1. If I ever get into this 600/1000 yd stuff....this is what I am doing.
