I did something similar for the top but used a miter saw stand and QD brackets for the base. Haven't tried it in the field yet, on concrete surfaces I just slide a piece of cardboard, etc., under a leg or two and it's stable.

That’s actually a brilliant idea. Porter cable makes a cheap folding miter stand with wheels. Eureka!

prone rifle from a bench ( think alex's 2000 yd match, 18 lb class)

STABLE ?? think 2" pipe not bent sheet metal.
while "portable", stable was the big plan.

You didn't state what your intentions/use for the bench were in your original post. I don't shoot CF BR but do shoot ARA matches. My build is suitable for ARA practice, fits my ARA set up just fine, just as stable as the actual benches used in the ARA matches, and I can put it in/get it out of the truck w/o issue. It takes 5 minutes max to set up, and my CF rifle set ups all fit on it with room to spare.:p

I used a Ryobi miter saw stand from the big orange box store. The QD brackets are included but I had my stand from previous projects, so I just had the expense of the table top and screws/bolts.

Sounds interesting.......Have any pics?

i did not use wood bolt/screws, but bolted leg brackets thru the first layer of plywood with nuts and lock washers on the outside and then laminated the second layer on top. did not want the "possiblity" of screws working loose.
Here are the drawings to my version I posted about a month back on the forum. This is the 2" version.

I was planning on having the bracket kits made and ready for sale. You can make the rest of the parts from Lowes and True Value. USing the drawings and pics you can make your own very easily.

You could certainly do it that way. I can assure you that my lag screws (driven in with an impact wrench) are not coming loose.

impact wrench or not, it is simply the strength of the bolt threads in the plywood.
compare that to trying to pull a bolt head thru the plywood.
with any luck neither of us will ever find out.

As an engineer, I have been hearing these arguments my whole career. I had a maintenance supervisor that would insist that the 12 inch steel beam he used to hang the coat rack was certainly much stronger than the 2x4 it replaced.

Like I said, knock yourself out.
