Poor man's tuner

Here's a poor man's tuner that works on my CZ455! Its a simple shaft collar installed with a specific torque. Tuners are a must for 22LR since you don't have the opportunity to tune loads. After fine tuning the position in .005" increments, this shrunk my groups by 30 to 40% (seriously).

Very repeatable. Below shows some 50 yard groups with Eley Club. These seem to be respectable groups for mid level Eley ammo.

Just thought I'd share. If on a budget, easy to try.

I like it. I have tuners on several rifles but that idea is just great. And if I'm not mistaken they come in a wide selection of diameters. Might be a little harder on one with a more aggressive taper, but still a great idea.

Oh yeah, some good groups too.

thanks, I think they are respectable groups for CZ w/ mid level ammo. Very happy with the vertical, and need to work more on the horizontal, but I have some ideas..

Can you give a closer picture, what are you using under the collar and why
not metal to metal to barrel.
Yeah, so my barrel is .9" , and I purposely got a 1" ID barrel sleeve. I'm using a 1/16 industrial rubber sheet, and torqueing to a specific value. The rubber sleeve is helping with distributing the install preload and keeps it from gauging the steel.. When torque is settled at 13 to 14 in-lb, it appears to be holding.

Not sure if the rubber helps with the tuning, but I'm getting really good results. For slightly tapered barrels, my expectation is the rubber will help.

I would "guess" that after a very few shots the rubber would start to break down at the contact points and to some greater or lesser extent change the dampening effect of the tuner.

Not necessarily, some industrial rubbers have a very high Denier rating and can withstand thousands of PSI without deformation with proper contact area. Think about 0-rings for 5,000 psi hydraulics, it comes in sheet form as well. You just have to find a supplier.

yup, because rubber acts incompressible.

Weight in front of the crown tunes gun's not behind
I agree, but I do believe they can be made to shoot to a certain degree compared to using nothing. using a Scotts mid-barrel I have seen really good results, but they could never be fine tuned without the weight forward of the crown.
in other words it is better then nothing

Lee.. ain't smallbore shooters been using barrel weights for a while now?

The results you are seeing is similar to what you would get from a mid-barrel tuner, such as a Scotts. I would suggest you try soborathan instead of rubber and only tighten the collar screws to keep the collar from moving. but to fine tune you need weight forward of the crown. here is an example of my early testing using a home made tuner, the screw is so that I could repeat settings as I move the weight forward on the tube. it was fun experimenting.

I believe the barrel weights such as for the Anschutz has been around for sometime, and again they work like a mid-barrel. current technology is bloop tubes with an adjustable weight head which places weight forward of the crown. like everything else refinements and testing give us what currently provides the best results.

Looks like an idea with potential to me. Putting the weight forward of the crown somewhat requires a threaded muzzle which makes it easier to adjust and maybe more precise.
