We are approaching the climax of what is certainly the most absurd presidential election I have ever witnessed. The US political duopoly has presented the electorate with a choice between a pair of insane megalomaniacs, one psychopath, one sociopath. The populous, having been conditioned from birth to believe that they have no other options, believe that they must vote for one or the other evil choice.
I'll share a bit of truth that came to me as a small epiphany several elections back. YOUR VOTE PROBABLY DOESN'T MATTER. Many American voters seem to labor under the delusion that the President is elected by popular vote. This is simply not the case. We vote by states to select Electors who vote for the President. In all but two states (Maine & Nebraska), this is a "winner take all" system. Many states are so strongly "red" or "blue" the you can vote for any candidate, write-in yourself or stay home an it will have absolutely no impact on the election.
If you vote in one of the "battleground" states (e.g. Pennsylvania, Ohio, Florida) your vote does count and you should vote your conscience, holding your nose as necessary. If you live in a highly partisan winner-take-all state (e.g. California, New York, Texas, Mississippi, etc.) your vote will neither change nor reinforce the outcome in any way, shape or form. In other words, your vote is not important.
But you can use your vote to both send a message and insure the continuation of a viable political alternative. Staying home only sends the message that you're lazy and don't care. A vote for Gary Johnson sends the message that you reject the duopoly's stranglehold on American politics and pathetic choice of candidates. It also can send the message that the winner governs without the consent of the majority of the voters. If Johnson receives at least 5% of the vote it also assures that Libertarians receive matching funds to keep their voice alive in the political arena.
