Play With Your Food: Clean Brass With Rice

Please enlighten us poor, confrontational souls by explaining how sparkly brass inhibits accuracy or precision.

I think the idea is that brass that's been wet cleaned has extra "grip" due to bare brass contacting the bearing surface of the bullet. Some BR shooters claim that some carbon fouling acts as a lube and helps in bullet release lowering neck tension to a small degree.

Some guys will use lube or graphite in the inside of case necks prior to bullet seating to help improve consistency in bullet grip or what we call "neck tension".

Of course we all know that shiny = smaller groups. That's true in regards to brass or polished actions.

I tried polishing my powder and primers once...that didn't go so well. :p

He who dies with the shiniest brass wins. It's the game that's sweeping the ocean, right after The Mudshark did.

Has anyone tried the long grain rice? I noticed that the Nishiki rice mentioned in the link was medium. Maybe the long grain may be a bit fatter and cut the flash hole filling another 2-3%?

As far as soot in the necks after processing, a quick dip of the newly cleaned neck in the graphite tin should make things a bit more consistent.....maybe?

But rice is "destined to take the place of the mudshark in your mythology"...if you rub the rice on the case with a vigorous circular motion;).

Use Susan Rice if you don't want other shooters to find out your real secrets.

Had a large amount of moly bullets (price was right). I don't shoot them BUT in the vibratory tumbler with rice alone, all the moly was gone. As far as as negative effect on accuracy, I saw none.

I have it on good authority that dry Kraft M &C is great in the tumbler.

And...don't be fooled my imitation M&C! Kraft M&Cs special blend of 'cheese' powder' is key to a mirror finish...
Thank me later o_O

I've been using rice and SS on and off since this thread came out.

My observations are:
SS, beautiful but case mouths are a mess.
Rice, OK job but cases become packed with rice, primer pockets are always filled with rice.

I like SS enough that I will continue to use it.

I will not be continuing use of rice.

I've tried a few methods and most have drawbacks, walnut is dusty, corn cob is dusty, steel pins stick in sideways in certain size brass and beat the bejessus out of the brass, so I use a combination of tumbling in walnut, then ultrasonic, and then compressed air. YMMV.

Ultrasonic did not get the brass as clean as I wanted, Hornady. Great for parts. I got all the matching Hornady stuff. So no excuses.

However, your comment has made me interested in combining SS and Ultrasonic. First a quick tumble in SS to loosen deposits. Then Ultrasonic. Rinse, dry, continue. Add to that, I want to slow down the SS tumbler. I am willing to try my router variable speed controller and sacrifice the SS tumbler if it blows up the timer or perhaps I should put the variable speed controller in like with the motor and not include the timer.

When I use case lube the cases are dry media tumbled after. I have walnut bedding. Proper walnut tumbling media. I haven't really tried corn cob. A buddy recommended it but I have not found what he suggested.

I have never had a pin stick in a primer pocket or flash hole. They will stick inside the cases when wet and fall out after drying. No problem just put them back in with the rest.
