Or maybe it's like the man who sports the Porsche key fob and hat, but drives a '77 Plymouth Omni.

I think it's more like the guy who bought a new $70k domestic brand pickup but refuses to tip his waiter at the restaurant out of "principle".

My 0.02 is that if we wall in this garden, then we'll find surprisingly few folks to enjoy it with. The site is great because of the participation by everyone.

In order to place an Add you have to be a Contributing Member.

When placing an Add in the classifieds, the first 48 hours its viewed by Gold, Silver, & Bronze Members (any paying level deemed appropriate by the forum boss).

After the Initial 48 hour period all members can view it. That way non-paying members can see what's been offered, but they missed a first chance due to being a Non-Paying member.

Incentive.....

What about the guys who contribute all their knowledge? Should they get paid for that? It was their time and effort that they then took a step further to post on this forum for you. I agree with what you’re saying that’s why I pay, but that doesn’t put me in any position to tell others to pay. It all goes back to this being a paying site. It’s not, so forum members should be able to not contribute without getting harassed or looked at as lesser.

I’m sure I’ve received way more help and info from non contributing members than I ever have from a silver or gold. I had a non paying member build me a custom stock and only charged me the cost of materials...has he not contributed? He brought me to the site and I thought it was worth it to pay then.
this is one thing i think about. There are certain people who shouldnt have to pay at all and still get a gold or whatever membership. I dont know how you would decide who gets that. Mabie some do get something I dont know. I can think of alot of very knowledgeable guys who dont post much anymore. I wonder what percentage of the total membership actually uses the classifieds.

i been reading this and following it... kinda pisses me off the contributors trying to shame people into contributing to this forum... im pretty new here ...joined a few months ago because a few good friends from another forum recomended i should ..so i did... thinking i might learn something new here that may help my game...but really hasnt happened... im not a newbie to shooting or reloading... i come here mostly to see if i can help others with questions they may have... i love shooting and reloading and do alot of both and i also enjoy sharing what i have learned over the years... i think i have asked 2 or 3 questions on here and think i got 3 or 4 replies to them with little help but thats ok.. i have put my input in on several threads that i feel like was sound advice to the op... the new guys that come here with questions get a 100 replies with about 75% of the answers being not very good advice and 25 % being sound advice... im not sure how a new guy weeds all the bad answers out and gain from the good answers without knowing the answers to begin with...so for now my contribution to the forum will be from giving sound advice when i can... i dont plan on selling any thing on here and i have bought a couple barrels... but for the most part i come here to help... if that isnt enough then by all means ban me or i can leave on my own if need be... but dont try to shame me...

Hey gman47564 Thanks for helping the new guys out. I am still learning and get a lot of good leads from this site. The reason I Contribute is that I benefit from the site and want to keep this huge source of information for other newbies like myself going to support our sport. Not picking a fight here but you yourself bought barrels from the site and may have got a good deal. So we all benefit from the site. JMHO

I agree. Put out the options and let people do what they like but trying to shame me isn't going to work either. I'm on sites that don't charge and plenty out there that give the option, which is the best way. Give people who join better perks like those listed and people wanting them will join for that advantage. I think if forced then membership will drop as will content. Have seen it before. Let people decide for themselves.

With any group, you are going to have the few that pull the weight, shooting club, deer camp, church, you name it, that's just the way it is. That doesn't bother me so much as the guy that invest the minimum but takes the most, you know him, the guy that never participates in the cooking, but is first in line to eat, and eats the most, that guy gets under my skin, because he does not care about the group, only himself.

If you enjoy the site, you should really contribute if at all able, if you don't think it's worth it, you should check out some other forums and see how full of crap and what miserable experiences they are. The BOSS does a great job here, keeping it civil and weeding through the BS so you don't have to, that alone is worth the price to me.

Yes they do do a very good job here. I would never say they don't or speak bad about the site. I am a moderator on two other major sites and it's not easy work. Still I believe they should keep it voluntary and allow people to make their own decision.

There are guys in this thread talking about limiting silver members...come on...get out of here with this non-sense.

How is this nonsense? You can't go to a gas station and get premium gas for the regular gas price, can you? It should be the same here. Life is tiered..... Those that pay/contribute more should receive more. If you don't want to contribute, then don't, but it's absurd to expect to get the same benefits as those that carry the weight.

It appears to me that the "rub" seems to be primarily with the use of the classifieds when it comes to contributors or non-contributors.
I say this because, what does it hurt for someone to stumble onto this site and browse thru everything and possibly ask a few questions or remark in a post that the person may have some knowledge about? It shouldn't cost him anything to browse and respond to or start a thread. We all visit other sites and post threads, browse, respond to threads of interest...gain and/or pass on knowledge. That is what open forums are for and it would seem a shame to charge for someone to do these basic things...doesn't give the appearance of being a very friendly/open site if you must pay to join. We have all found posts or had answers to some of our questions that we would have gladly paid for the responses...and we all have had answers and or remarks to our posts that we wouldn't pay one cent for.

Therefore, if the classifieds is where it would benefit the most for the site to have contributors, then it should make things a little simpler...you can then target this specific section. A couple of things could be done...
1)If a person is not a contributor, they should be able to browse the classifieds and possibly purchase something...this benefits the contributors in the fact that their item gets a broader buyer base...their item can be purchased by either a contributor or a non-contributor. Win win for all involved.(truth be known, I probably joined this site because of something I saw and I couldn't live without in the classifieds way back when...it evolved from there)
2)If a non-contributor wants to sell something and still doesn't want to be a contributor, then charge them a standard fee or % of sale to sell something...if they are on a fixed income, this does not pressure them into becoming a contributor and if they are on a fixed income, they will only post things for sale as their budget will allow.
2)Cut out the silver versus gold contributor "status"...just banner it "Contributor" and make it a standard fee for all that want unlimited access/use of classifieds. See no reason for a "status" to be associated with it...what will it be after Silver, Gold and Platinum...Super Platinum??? If someone feels the need to make a donation to the site...do so, but don't force the same on others.

It amazes me that some people think that contributing knowledge and contributing money are the same thing..... HUGE difference!!!! Couldn't be more different!!!

First, the Boss can't take the knowledge about shooting, reloading etc from this site and pay for software. It just can't be done. Knowledge isn't currency and it takes currency to run the site.
Second, the knowledge that is contributed goes to the forum members. They suck it up and hopefully use it to improve their shooting. The money goes to the Boss. He sucks it up and then spends it so we can have the opportunity to suck up more knowledge. No monetary contributions = no site = no more knowledge.

It's not complicated at all.... It's really just basic math.
