Plan “BEAN”

I didn’t know that each half bean was capable of germination. Several were split and I thought they wouldn’t produce a plant but this is showing otherwise.

Those are not waiting to be in the ground, want to sprout right there.

Those are in the truck bed. A couple handfuls spilled off the pallet and got soaked in rain that night. When I pulled out the pallet this is what I found. I have some thrown out behind my shop to monitor the germination without running to the field. I usually take whatever seed falls in my pockets during planting to make a test plot at home.

just put them all in the backyard, don't have to go that far and don't have to get up that early.

Busy morning, that’s the last of the soybean plots. Rain has been a problem this year but that’s better than no rain. 4th July is normally considered the cut off date for beans but this year is an exception with some corn fields still behind the knee high rule.

I’m expecting acorns to be the dominant food source this year but I had to find out if this broadcast would work. I did see considerable results but forgot to photograph it for you guys. I will try to get some proof next time out but won’t really know until the winter if it’s a food source significant.

I have found that some possible "other" good plantings that are worth doing for deer and bear are, white clover, persimmons and crab apples. Don't get me wrong, soy beans are fantastic and the deer will start to eat the young plants which causes them to actually branch out and produce more beans.
If you like to bow hunt it is nice to have the deer/bear come to one confined spot for a close in shot. A big field of beans is great, but you never know where in the field they will come out. Eventually you will get a shot though. Good hunting!!!!

Everything just got rained on perfect, should be awesome. Shifting gears to brassicas soon! Have 3 plots to seed for a friend with Big and Beasty, a blended seed I haven’t tried yet but hear good reports. The seed is really fine so he wants me to sow for him.

Good looking food plots Mike.

I just got rutabaga and radish in. I got started a little late this year, but we got a good rain two hours after getting the seed in so they should take off quickly. I will have to fence until fall.

We are trying duel crop on a few plots this year. Beans-alfalfa on mine, sugar beet- turnip on 2 plots and the big and beasty that’s already blended with several brassicas.

Just planted 4 plots and still have a lot of seed. 1/2 acre of sugar beets and turnip, then another 2- 1/4 acre plots in big and beasty brassicas with purple tops added and then finished with a 1/2 acre of big beasty on a beautiful wood plot. Moving forward!

Big and beasty brassicas are already up. Had 2 rains this week and another coming tomorrow night. Our deer season starts in just 8 weeks on September 15th
