Tennifer, melonite, salt bath treating...

I realize this is a rifle site but I just want to show what a day in a quality leather holster (Galco-Royal Guard) does to the new Glock finish.

Glock no longer uses Tennifer because of EPA issues I was told and has gone to melonite. This is my 5th Glock firearm having used them as a LEO in all types of holsters and weather conditions possible. Not once has any of them ever rusted ever until now. I noticed discoloration 6 months ago and made an active effort to keep the slide oiled. The pistol did not get wet other than possible sweat from carrying.

So it looks like I will be getting this slide cerocoated..

That s**cks. I have a Mod. 19 Smith that had all of the bluing rusted/rubbed off from storing in a Galco leather holster. Just aggrivating.

Is it just me here, or is the common denominator the galco holster?

The other folks didn't mention which brand of holster they were using; it could be just holster storage in general, or it could be some substance used in the tanning process, or just the fact that keeping oil on a metal surface invites water to be trapped underneath it.

Or as the OP said, it could be sweat...

# 3 poster claimed galco too, where my observation came from. My first custom holster, the inside was not the rough fuzzy stuff, I called right away to complain thinking it offered some form of protection. I received an education in a couple minutes on the phone.

I thought about that too. So Ive taken to removing the pistol when I get home as a precaution.

I have had three other Glocks use this holster over the years with Tenifer finish and had no issue even with wearing it throughout the summer months and without an undershirt.

Glocks that are made in Austria still use the Tennifer treatment. Due to the amount of cyanide used in the treatment, our government would not allow the process to take place here. It's a much better finish than Melonite, and your holster is not causing the damage useless the leather has been tanned via a chemical process.

I finally got around to calling them and was told to send the slide in so they could look at it. I am sorry but paying $40 more is a deal breaker for me. They describe the weapon as:

" Having survived endurance tests and use by numerous Law Enforcement agencies, the G23 pistol has repeatedly demonstrated its world-class durability and reliability in the most adverse conditions. - Glock webpage"

I should not have to pay extra for a pistol that has not been abused and is less than 3 years old.

Anyway, I will send it in and see what they habe to say...
