Pistol info.

Short of trolling another website, where would one find some info on one of those "which pistol" questions.

Two years ago while at the IBS 600 yard Nationals in MS, there was a bunch of racket coming from the adjacent range. Pistol competition. Looked like a blast.

Anyway, I have a few pistols in the safe already. And on my hip, and next to my bed, and in my car, and in both desks at the office...etc...... I can't shoot for sh*t, at least compared to these guys!!!!

I am looking for a light kicking full sized 9mm. It doesn't need to be an eleventeen thousand doller, full blown race gun. I see that in the "comp gun" catigory. Glock has the Glock 34 gen 4, S& W has a ported comp gun, Springfield has thier comp series.

Anyone out there able to stear me in the correct direction..either where to ask/look, or even some actual advice?

Thanks,
Tod

I am a fan of block but any of the three would work for you. If you can shoot them and then decide what you like better. If you cannot do that you will need to get them in your hand to see what fits you best.

i have shot action pistol for years and there were a lot of Glock 22's out there in 40 sW, and also the 9mm. I personally competed with 1911's 45acp's using 200 gr cast bullets at 900fps. very nice.

the Glock pistol is a good one for what you seem to be wanting to do. it is accurate, 13 round clips and all sorts of upgrades if you desire. they just work, and lots of them go many thousands of rounds without a problem.

The Springfield Armory 1911 target 9mm is a great pistol for your stated needs. 1911's are capable of great triggers and with the weight, negligible recoil in a 9mm. They have adjustable sights and are in stainless for easy care and the ones I have shot are plenty accurate.

I have a Glock 34 and 35 with the compensated barrels. Love them both...very accurate and not picky about the ammo.

I've owned many Glocks. Sold them all, and they are not missed.

I like the idea of a 9mm 1911-style pistol -- but check function before you buy a Springfield.

Sig p226 is my recommendation. Rugged, reliable, accurate, holds its value. Find a German-made one if you can. I've had my P226 for 18 years. Other handguns have come and gone. I doubt that I will ever sell the P226.

I'm not a fan of polymer-framed pistols, but I did try out the new Walthers, and they have a very good trigger. Way, way better than Glock. The grip is much better shaped than Glock as well. The Glock grip is unnecessarily thick/wide in the wrong places.

Re Glocks -- I've taught a few dozen people to shoot pistol over the years. I have never found one single novice shooter who could shoot a Glock better than a Sig p226/228. In slow fire, it wasn't even close -- most people shot the Sig way better -- smaller groups, better control. For most people the Glock does NOT point naturally.

A lot of Glock owners don't believe me. Those that will give another pistol a fair try sometimes switch brands. I remember meeting a German shooter at SHOT Show. We were both looking over some really nice STI pistols. Holding an STI 1911, he said... "Now this is a pistol!" Then he added, "I can't believe I have been shooting that POS Glock for so long." The "POS" is an acronym. He said the words out loud.

Springfield XDm is by far my favorite polymer pistol in 9mm. The other 9mm I really like is a Browning High Power.

If you want a handgun that points better than the rest you need to go to the P08. Granted they have not been made new in a long time.

I just bought a P226 Elite, and can honestly say that I've never had a handgun fit my hand or point like this one does. I haven't owned a handgun in years, and really wasn't planning on buying this one, but after I picked it up & handled it for a bit, I couldn't get my wallet out fast enough.

4xforfun, I'd recommend trying a Sig, or at least handling one.

My current stable includes a few "six shooters" and only two autos: a Springfield XD-M 45 with a 4.5" tube, and a S & W M&P shield in 9mm ( my compact carry gun). I seem to favor the carry gun...not sure if it is a recoil thing or a small hands thing. Maybe a double stack S &W won't fit as well as the single stack.

My nephew had an XDM 5.25" comp in 40. I didn't notice any differance between my 45 and his 40, although,to be fair, I wasn't really looking at the time.

Again this will only be for plinking. Lately, I have been throwing clay pigeons out on my berm, but am thinking about getting some "steel" to plink at.

Ryan is spot on here.

The CZ SP-01 Shadow has probably taken over the Glocks at the top of the leaderboard in USPSA followed by Tangfolio. The cheaper CZ's have just as good ergos and a very acceptable trigger for less $ than the Shadow. CZ's fit small hands well.

Your light kicking quality will point you towards the steel framed guns. CZ 75, Tangfolio, Sig Sauer.

The SP-01 Shadow looks like a very nice pistol. But, at $1391 MSRP, it's twice as expensive as an entry-level CZ-75. Still it looks like it would work very well indeed for gun games:

Regarding the M&P 9mm. I like the ergos on that gun. Warranty is awesome. But try the trigger on one of the new Walthers and the M&P back to back. You'll be shocked ... the Walther is that much smoother and more "positive" feeling.

Has anyone shot the latest H&K VP9? That's supposed to be pretty good for a polymer-framed, striker-fired pistol.

I am a big 1911 fan. That was my first semiauto handgun that I shot and just really enjoyed all 1911's that I have ever shot. I also really like revolvers. I just can't get on the polymer gun wagon.

That being said I am forced to carry a Glock 19 for a service weapon everyday. I have never had an issue with it, that's including 7 years of working with canine(dirty job). It has been on many wet/muddy tracks and searches without an issue.

Again not my choice, but has done what it was designed for.

If I had a choice my service weapon would be in the Sig Sauer family.

The Shadow is very good for the games. The entry level CZ 75 plus some trigger parts from Cajun Gun works is almost just as good. The CZ P-09 is a good option as well if you like polymer and DA/SA or SA with safety type actions. At ~$460ish from Buds or KY Gun Co, it's a solid choice on a budget.

The HK and Sig striker fired pistols are supposed to be pretty sweet, but I have not had a hand on them yet.
