pistol action for rifle ?

Can I build a rifle using an XP-100 pistol action without breaking any regulations. I will use a barrel longer than 18 inches. Bruce

Bruce: You mean like this? Remington XP 100 pistol in .221 Fireball. Converted to a rifle by adding a Rifle Basix trigger, 24" Shilen barrel and a rifle stock. Can you tell it was ever a pistol? It's still a pistol with a rifle stock. I don't think you'll ever be asked. The only questions I ever get asked about it is, "Can I shoot it"? ;) It can always be converted back into a pistol.

Not a problem at all I do it all the time...... You just need to be sure the stock is long enough to suit the feds....

As long as the barrel is at least 16" long and the total length of the rifle is at least 26", you're good to go.
Like I said, I don't think anyone will ever ask. ;)

Thanks for the input.I was seeking the legal aspect. My son the (rookie) cop says it is not legal. Many times I saw where the xp 100 action was converted to a benchgun . So I was wondering if there really was some sort of a violation of the law. Most people would just pass the conversion off as a model 600/660 action i guess. Sure would like to prove the smart ass wrong. Thanks, Bruce

cletus, it is legal to convert a pistol action to a rifle but the Feds frown on taking a rifle action and converting it to a pistol. Go figure. I have a rifle which i had built on an XP-100 action in 223 caliber. One of the most accurate in my battery of rifles. Ron

I thought I would buy the H S precision stock for the 600/660 and swap the action back and forth for a pistol/rife type of thing as the spirit moves me. My action is already trued with a double pinned recoil lug. As a pistol it shoots very well. Bruce

No going back once a rifle? Then why can you put a long barrel and stock on a Contender - sure is easy to make a pistol again. I'm not saying you are wrong (we are talking about the govt's rules after all). Just seems odd, one the receiver is registered as a pistol I thought that was what it was - maybe there is more to it.

Some receivers are registered as either/or....and marked as such. IF used as a pistol, then built to a rifle, not supposed to swap back to pistol.

Believe they are reviewing the situation with the contender issue.

Thought about calling BATF?

I've heard about that so-called regulation that you can't switch back to a pistol, but have not gone to the trouble to see if it's real. You might get into trouble in cities or states where firearms are registered but I don't see how the Feds would enforce such a rule since there is no Federal registration. I have an XP100 that has been a pistol twice and a rifle three times. How would anyone but me (and now you) know??

You are only going to get caught if somebody checks.

When the manufacturer(s) make any action, put the serial number on it, they designate the action as rifle, pistol, or both.

The people who build AR's have quite the time with this...as a lower can be made into either, with just a changed of buffer tube or stock. Check some of the AR lowers...most say 5.56 rifle or similar.....some are clearly marked pistol only.

Just one of those laws that only hurts if you get caught...

Here`s something else to think on,,some of the guys on another forum are taking rifle actions and installing 18 inch barrels on them, installing them in a pistol rear grip stock,,thus making it longer than 26 inch,,and their saying thats legal..Sounds kinda like asking for trouble to me...I`ll stick with what i know is legal...But I`ve always heard that once you build a rifle out of a pistol action you can`t legally change it back,,but could be wrong on that...

Where would somebody check on the legal aspect? Is there a web site that would contain the proper info ? Does anyone know ? I'm going to look today ,if I find something I'll surely post it Thanks, Bruce

In the spirit of the law, they are ok, because the barrel is longer than 16"...and would not be classified as a short barrelled rifle, therefore, not a registered item. Not sure on the pistol grip though.
