Pick my ammo for deer

I use a Colt Ar-15 hbar flattop with a 16in bar. with a 1/9 twist. I have been using Hornady 75 Gr. BTHP Match ammo with great success. I would like to go with something lighter that would work up to 300 yards as I have read the 1/9 likes a smaller bullet at long distances.

I would pick a more suitable caliber rifle for deer if I were you. A 243 Win at the starting point. But if you insist on taking your chances with a mouse gun go with the Nosler 60 gr Partition and stay inside 200 yards and only take broadside lung shots.

I agree with the others 300 yards will make you unhappy if you are unable to find the deer. For 200 yards and less I would use a 70 grain Speer soft point or a 64 grain Winchester power point. I am sure the 60 grain Nosler partition would work as well I just have never used them. I would try and limit my shots to 100 yards if at all possible when deer hunting with a 223. I have killed two hogs weighing close to 200 pounds with a 223 using 60 grain nosler bt's but both shots were at around 75 yards. Both hogs dropped in there tracks.
A bigger caliber 243 and up using heavier bullets will kill alot better up to 300 yards due to the higher energy at longer distances.

Wow, hundreds of deer! That's pretty good.

Must live where you can shoot 10 a year, for the last 20 years...? If'n you mean no more than a mear 200 total!

I have been shooting a barnes X bullet 52 or 53gr what ever that is. I will look tonight when I go home. I have been pretty happy with that bullet. You can go the the next weight up and you should be fine. When I shoot my AR also a 16inch tube I never take a shot farther than 200yds. I am sure I could get 300 but I have other rifles that need the love also.

Got a hog,250lbs) at about 100 yards with the 60gr NP last Thrusday. Shot it behing shoulder and it went about 20 yards and feel dead. No exit hole, but it did the job.

I got another hog today with the 60g NP. It was around 100 yards and I got lungs and heart. It knocked it down then ran about 60 yards. Also, got a deer two days ago with a neck shot,50 yards). So far I am liking the NP. Also, the ACOG works great in low light. It was almost dark when I shot the deer and the red dot worked great.

I have another field report on the 60 grain np. I don't like them on deer. I have shoot several with it,5) and it doesn't expand very well.I still got the deer after a second shoot on a few of them. Now, for hogs,6), it has worked quite well. On one 300 pound hog the entrance hole was very large an the bullet split to make 2 exit holes. This was about a 10 yard shot. I think a will go back to a hollow point,75grain) as I never had any problems with them.
