Peterson now or Lapua later, maybe?

As some may know, Lapua 6BR brass is near unobtainium in Canada right now. Every dealer I contacted is waiting on a batch, someday, somehow. I did however find a local-ish "deal" for 300 pieces of Peterson. So as the title says: Would YOU wait for Lapua brass if and when it comes in, or jump on the Peterson now?

I'm in the Process of comparing, Lapua to Peterson Brass, NOW !
So far, My 6.5 Creed. Rifle, CAN'T tell ANY,.. Accuracy, Difference !
And, I Haven't had to, Turn Neck's ,.. on either brand !
I'd GRAB, the Peterson Brass to be safe, as you may NOT get, any Lapua brass for, a LONG while,.. IMO

I've read probably 8-10 threads now over the past year or so, where people have compared the two and shot the two. Every one of the threads I have read said there was no difference in accuracy, However the Peterson did hold like a grain +or- less powder or something like that. I've got a 6br barrel on the way soon and ill be using perterson brass for it.

If it were me. I would not wait for Lapua in your situation. Took me almost 6 months to snag 2 boxes. Id get in stock notifications, and by the time I got to the site it was gone. A couple times it said in stock and id click add to cart and it was out of stock when I went to check out. Get that Peterson.

I haven’t tried Peterson 6BR brass, I am using it in three other cartridges and have been pleased with the results. I’d grab the Peterson and have some fun, who knows when Lapua will show up again. Either that or put the word out your looking for some Lapua with a WTB ad and see if you get lucky, chances are you won’t get 300 pieces of the same lot though…..

I think it's a lot about how hot you load and how they hold up for you. Both appear to be good but it appears to me that the Lapua holds up better in most chamberings. You may be well pleased with something other than Lapua if you typically load on the moderate side and are happy there.

Just one anecdote, but I tortured my 6.5x47 Peterson brass with extreme loads (153.5 going 2820fps) and it’s still going strong some 13 reloads later. I moved on before it wore out after 4 barrels. I have their 6BR necked down to 22BR but have only run moderate loads.

The more annoying point with Peterson for me is the radius in the corner of the primer pockets and the fact they run on the shallow side of allowable tolerances. With Peterson, I think you have to uniform the primer pockets to get consistent primer seating and feel whereas Lapua are usually deep and with a minimal radius in the pocket corner and can be used out of the box.

I can't say about the x47 brass. I've not tried any of the Peterson x47 brass yet. It may be even better than Lapua...or not. I'd love for them to be a certain American made alternative to Lapua, though....and it may well be. I will just say that even if it's superior to Lapua in one caliber, I don't think it's safe to assume it'll be better in a different case. You're doing the only thing you can do, to know...you're testing it. That's a big and good thing, in itself. Even if it were total junk, you know that way. Lol!

I asked Peterson if they had plans to make any PPC/ARC/Grendel cases and they unfortunately said no. I wish there were more options for that case head than Lapua, Norma, and Starline in order of quality.

Me too. I'm a little surprised, too. Even if they did just 1 of them, the others could easily be made from it. I think the Grendel would make a lot of sense as it could be used for all three plus necked up or down variations and wouldn't be short in areas that ppc brass would/is..for say a Grendel chamber after fireforming. Seems like a pretty substantial market when you consider how many AR15's it would cover with a single sku. Not to mention all the bolt gun guys at all.

I haven’t asked Alpha, but I don’t imagine they’re working on it either. I really hope the 6 and 22 ARC take off in popularity and drive some more demand to get more companies in the game.

Been thinking the same thing for a while. Of course the 22 ARC is exactly a 22 Grendel, so that might be reason enough for them to go that direction if the arc family takes off as well as it seems to have, early on. The PPC guys will love it if so. I use Grendel brass for a ppc at times. The Lapua Grendel brass is every bit as good as their 220R brass and is easier to make from Grendel than fireforming from 220R.

Oops! I shouldn't have told that. Lol! Now it'll sell out before I can get more. ;)
