Peterson Cartridge Palma Cases

They're either going to have to be better than Lapua or charge less for their product. At the same price, shooters will go with what they know.

The internal volume will probably tell a lot. If you purchase some, let us know what you find.
Interesting, where did you find the info about the flash hole and primer? Haven't seen that online. Also, I wonder if they got an okay from the NRA to use the word "Palma" that's a copyrighted term. Lapua had to get an okay to use it.

Not sure why you quoted me? I had nothing to do with the OP or the name the brass company is using; just making an observation about relative case volume. FWIW - Palma shooting has been around for a very long time. In fact, the actual origin of the word "Palma" does not even seem to be clear. I'd be very surprised if Lapua or anyone else was legally required permission to name their brass "Palma", any more than they would have to obtain permission to call it .308 Win brass. Neither of these companies, nor the NRA, have trademarked the word "Palma" as far as I can tell.

IIRC the first Palma match was somewhere around 1881 or so, an evolution of the Irish-American Creedmoor matches. Not sure what the word itself referred to, like 'Creedmoor' originally referred to the Creedmoor property where the first match was held.

I believe that Palma Promotions (heavily supported by Sierra) may have the trademark registered. Berger had to call their 155.5 'Fullbore' to avoid trademark issues.

Should be interesting, either way.

Two palma shooters from my club were asked to test their brass. It don't hold up. I don't know all the particulars but the primer pushing out was one issue.

The 'Palma' name is trademarked and legally owned by the US Palma Teams, not the NRA. To date, AFAIK the teams have only shared the name and allowed it to be used on commercial products with partners which have developed those products in cooperation with them - ie Sierra with the original 155gn Palma MK since transferred onto the later version of the bullet; Lapua which produced the SR primed case at the teams' request and worked with them on development before putting it into production. I gather that the right to use the name is jealously guarded, so did wonder myself when I saw that Peterson Cartridge is doing so.

If the Palma name becomes an issue, they could probably just change the name to .308 Win Small Rifle Primer brass. Most would know exactly what it was.

As we get good supplies of both of the original Lapua versions of the 308 at good prices in the UK, it's Peterson's take on the 6.5 Creedmoor that currently interests us more. When it was announced it would soon be imported and available a month or two back, Lapua hadn't then confirmed it was producing this case, or when it would arrive. So, we were more than a little interested to see how Peterson's version compared to Hornady on quality and price. I haven't heard yet if any Peterson Creedmoor has actually arrived, but with Lapua expected in the spring, that has also become a little academic - unless it is both keenly priced and high quality. Hornady isn't cheap here on the few occasions its Creedmoor cases are actually in stock, and whilst the Norma version is excellent, it's pricey at £120 ($151) / 100.

After noticing "Palma" cases listed on the Peterson website I phoned them and asked about the pocket & flash hole size. My post is merely reporting what I was told.

You mean all the custom barrel makers got the ok to use the name Palma on their palma contour barrels?

They use it as a descriptive term relating to use, same as F-Class or Varmint. If they incorporated the name it into a product and advertising brand name, or a company name as in the Denver Palma Barrel Company or suchlike, then trademark laws can kick in assuming the trademark holder takes infringements seriously which I gather the US Palma teams have in the past on occasions. Something being trademarked doesn't mean the word can't be used in every context however.

We have an interesting trademark issue in the UK. There is a frozen food retail chain here simply called 'Iceland'. The company has trademarked its name worldwide and takes infringements very seriously. It has taken several Icelandic (ie based in Iceland the country) companies and organizations to court over using 'Iceland' in their names or products and wins each time. Personally, I think it's outrageous and ridiculous, but it's obviously trademark law.
