Perfect Group

Twud,

It depends on the definition of "perfect". In short-range benchrest, a perfect group would be a .0000" and I don't think that's ever been done.

The IBS Heavy Varmint 100-yd small group was a 5-shot, 0.052" set by J. Ventriglia in 1980.

However, in NRA full-bore or F-Class, perfect would be all shots in the ten-ring and all Xs. And yes, that has been done at some distances. But then, some people would say that this is "score" competition rather than group size competition, so you are back to definitional squables.

Yes, I've shot many perfect groups, that is, .000", but never in competition because they always insist that I have to shoot more than one shot.

The smallest group shot in registered competion is, I believe, a .009" posted way back in 1973.

A perfect group was shot in 1973 at Skunk Creek Range. It still stands as a .000 Range Record, verified later by an electron micro-scope. But in NBRSA competition all potential records must be sent to the Records Committee. After the Records Committee assigns several members to measure measure an average is taken. The perfect group came back as a .009 group. By the way NBRSA groups are measured to thousandth's, thus the .009. Aggs are recorded to 4 places,.2529 for example.
For more info on the .009 read my Post here under Smallest Group.
