Perfect caliber.....

So a friend gave me over 1000 once fired .308 brass. I’ve been going to build a veritable multi-purpose long range gun. I have a brand new composite pull off stock off a Remington 5R. I’m fond of Barnard actions so I’m thinking of Barnard SM since it has the Remington 700 footprint with maybe a bix n Andy trigger.

So what can I do with the brass? Keep it at .308 or should I go Remington 260? What else can I do? I do want good barrel life as well.

What do I plan to do with it? I’m not a hunter but if I do ever go, well I’ll shave something to use. I most of the time will practice sniper skills, learning windage and elevation changes to make effective one shot success. Will likely shoot some FTR with it at 1000yds.

Thanks

Chad

If you are going to shoot some FTR,stick with the 308.

If you are going to shoot FT/R you have NO CHOICE using that brass but to stay with the .308.. You can ONLY shoot .223 or .308 in FT/R.

If you go with a Barnard Action ? ( I have them). Why would you not use the Barnard Trigger ??

Oh good to know! So F-Open I can shoot whatever caliber? What should I consider then? I started this thread because I am open to all options. I thought the FT/R was use of bi-pod. Please forgive my ignorance.

I have a Barnard too with the Barnard trigger. Love it. I read the SM action didn’t come with one so I figured I try a bix since everyone says they Love them. I open to be swayed not to go bix as well. That would save a few bucks!

1000 rounds fired in what? A machine gun? An AR10 or other autoloader? A factory rifle with a sloppy chamber? My first rule of accuracy and YMMV: DO NOT use brass fired in another rifle. Sell or scrap the brass. You could be opening up a can of worms with used brass trying to use it in another rifle, especially one with a custom chamber.

I’m also looking for a good front rest. I’ve never invested in one and have always shot off a 2by4. Even in competition!. Time to upgrade after 7 or eight years.

Thanks

Most from factory 700. Some after a custom barrel was installed. I guess that is something to think about.

Chad, - As far as I know BIX-N-Andy has not yet fully developed a working trigger for the Barnard Action Line. - I've heard talk that they were discussing it but I'm still waiting to hear more back. - As to my understanding (and I could be misinformed) a Barnard Trigger is basically your only option on a Barnard Action, unless someone's adapted the Jewell Triggers to work.

Regarding the caliber, I'd stay with the 308 Winchester throated for FT-R Bullets.

Yep, a BIG can of worms.
He might get lucky...Free Brass is just that...Try it & see.. I had acquired a #300 or so size lot of 6mmbr fired from a Savage Factory Barrel..I reformed it to BRX for my old Shilen BRX barrel...Some work, some not so well...For my Wife's new Brux Barrel I had the gunsmith Hydraform 200 pieces of Virgin Lapua Brass , More Better ..You will have to use em to find out..Mike in Ct

Agree reforming to another cartridge could be a workable process with used brass and yes, he may get lucky. It boils down to what is your time and other components cost worth to try it in a rifle of the same cartridge? I use Remington brand once fired .223 to fireform for .20 practicals but do not use it in any .223 rifle. Aside from that, building or buying a rifle because one was given a pile of brass used in two different rifles and then trying to get that brass to work would be a good learning experience.:D

Funny Hogpatrol...I saved a big batch of once fired WW 223 brass to use in my 25/223 Goofy...Of course that is a diff animal...Factory chamber & crappy re-bore job by un-named hack of a gun smith in AZ we won't mention here...The Brass works, rest of it is junk now....mike in ct still unhappy w his retirement project rifle ...#ScrewDAN

Oh & while we are on the subject of Custom Barrels Chambers Re-using once fired brass...Shout out to Chris & his crew up at Pac-Nor...He did my Tac 20 a hundred years ago...It shoots just OK to pretty good with reformed odd lot 223 brass...Some works really well & some not so well ...The Dakota Lapua stuff is like magic in that barrel / chamber...Mike in CT

PM the name of smith in AZ, why, I got one I send to, but his name is Tom, enough said here,,

Just my .02 as stated above using brass fired in another chamber is a crap shoot and that's if you know the brass is from the same lot. If this is mixed brands or lot numbers I would consider it a 1000+ fishing weights.
