A friend and I were out Saturday evening in north western Pennsylvania shooting woodchucks. I had just shot two at 450 yards when out of nowhere came this big coyote. He picked up one of the chucks that I shot and decided to take off with it,went about 10 feet and dropped it and looked at it and that’s when I shot. Beware of free meals they usually come at a price! This is not the first time I have shot a coyote while a chuck hunting I swear they hear the shot and think it’s the dinner bell.

Think of all the animals that one will not eat.. That's why I love to kill coyotes. That sure is a big coyote too. A friend that hunts down in Mississippi said when they shoot a deer they have to watch for black bears. They have had the Bears come in several times looking for a meal after a shot. Time to open bear season in my way of thinking. Good shooting.

Mike I don't know where you are but here in northern N.H. county that is about the average size. I have 85 lb. shep mix and I swear some in the woods around here and Litchfield look bigger than him.

Sorry Guys, I'm old & I spent a lot of time out in the woods, streams & fields. Only shot one coyote in my entire life. Down In Berlin Ct back in the early Eighties. Poor thing thought I was food. He jumped a fence line behind me one evening. While chuck hunting. I was resting under an apple tree on a side hill. I spun around to look for the sound behind me & he took off running. I nailed him at about 70 yards out w my trusty 22-250 . He spun & bit the wound & died. He was suffering horribly from sarcoptic mange , One eye closed shut. really crappy fur, only weighed maybe 30 lbs. The Farmer made me bury/burn him right in the field that night. After that & running a good string of bird dogs. I never bothered looking to shoot another. You all are tempting me to look into this again. They just look too much like dogs. Mike in Ct

They claim 73 lbs is the record, I personally have seen 72 lbs coyotes trapped in NY.

Ray they claim the Eastern coyote has been cross bred with the wolf, causing the big difference in size from the western. I don't know. I know they breed with some dogs hence the coy dog.
There was one next door one night and my dog was going nuts, the wife saw it and thought it was a stray German Shepard coming to visit.

I wish I would’ve had someway to weigh him. I have a male beagle at home last time I took him to the vet he was 51 pounds. That coyote felt every bit as heavy as him. It’s easy to see how that guy could easily take down a small deer or a fawn with no effort at all. I don’t hunt deer in this area but hopefully I did the local hunters a favor by taking him out,the problem is like chucks for everyone ya shoot six come to the funeral.You can see the shot placement, that thing ran around 75 yards or so full speed before tipping over.Tough critters for sure!

I had the same thing happen to me a few years ago. I was hunting ghogs and shot a ghogs at 185 yards away near a tree line. I continued to watch the tree line for more hogs when about an hour later I saw something stick it's head out of the brush in the tree line.

At first I thought it was dog but the farmer did not have any dogs. Whatever it was it just sat there surveying the area. About fifteen minutes later it emerged, grabbed my dead ghogs, tossed it up in the air, then grabbed it by the neck. It was coyote, a large one. I was already up on my shooting sticks so I took careful aim, behind the shoulder and sent a 50 grain Nosler BT. I hit him good but he ran into the tree line. Later I went looking and found him dead, about ten yards inside the tree line.

I've shot two more while hunting ghogs. One was stalking one of the farmer's cats that was watching a fresh cut corn field for birds. The Yote was approaching from behind, just like those Lion shows you see on Nat Geo. I nailed him at 234 yards with my 223 Rem Model 700. Small one.

Two years ago I got one late in the evening when he poked his head out of row of corn. I had a kneeling profile shot at about 100 yards. I nailed him with my 223 Rem Model 7.

Never saw a yote but have had red fox come out and dine on my kills. Watched two young ones fight over one once...quite the show every time. Bald eagles also but we have been warned about possible lead poisoning for them.

FWIW.…. I totally agree with ya that they equate the shot to the dinner bell and especially at this time of year. The coyotes I've seen after live chucks hunt in pairs. One more thing, I betcha a soda that there is a coyote den not too far from there, and that big fella was out grocery shopping for the pups. ;-) JME. WD

l shot a coyote with a COYOTE!!! Twas my first Prairie Dog trip to North Dakota maybe 20yrs back.. l was shooting a recently lntroduced Winchester Model 70 ''COYOTE'' Varmint in 223Rem... Laminated stock, blued receiver, and a 24''stainless barrel... 6-18x40 VXII Leupold scope.. l was also shooting Winchester's 45gr JHP White Box@3600fps. lt was app 10:00am when the old boy came trotting up over a hill maybe 150yds from me. He was looking for a free meal!! Just not the kind l was fixin to serve up He kinda startled me as l shot him quickly offhand from my shoulder... That JHP hit him a bit low in the ribs but he wasn't going anywhere... He had a real BAD tummy ache with a bit of it dragging the ground... Next 45gr was thru the shoulders producing an instant Bang Flop... l don't know how much he weighed because l did not pick him up l can say however he was as long as my Winchester Coyote 223 from head to tail.. Winchester 45 gr White Box 223 is my favourite factory ammo... l buy the Winchesters when l fly because TSA only allows factory ammo on commercial aircraft.. No hand loads

I've done a lot of commercial flying with rifles and ammo, and have never brought anything but handloads. There's no TSA or FAA rule against flying with handloaded ammo.

Here is the relevant section of the CFR.

If traveling to most countries in Africa, the ammunition is supposed to have the proper headstamp (i.e., no 30BR made from 6BR-headstamped brass) matching a firearm that you are also transporting. However, nobody has ever actually checked mine.

l notice the page was last updated in 2018.. l haven't flown to shoot since app 2012.
lt was 'factory ammo' then... 11 pounds isn't much ammo either.. ESP if the shooting is really good... 11 pounds about 350rds of 223 white box 45gr Winchesters... l have tried to buy more after arrival... One reason l prefer 223Rem while flying

There is absolutely no requirement that ammo be in factory packaging, as long as it is secure (i.e., in a plastic MTM box). Thousands of competitive shooters and tens of thousands of hunters travel with handloads. I've never, ever, carried factory ammo or factory packaging on an airplane -- handloads only, in plastic ammo boxes.

Airline baggage agents know next to nothing (and that's being generous) about the regulations on traveling with firearms. I always bring a copy of 49 CFR 175.10 (a)(8) with me when I travel. Never had an issue that couldn't be resolved quickly by an agent (or supervisor) who can read the English language. The vast majority of the time I just get waved through.

• Ammunition is prohibited in carry-on baggage, but may be transported in checked baggage.
• Firearm magazines and ammunition clips, whether loaded or empty, must be securely boxed or included within a hard-sided case containing an unloaded firearm. Read the requirements governing the transport of ammunition in checked baggage as defined by 49 CFR 175.10 (a)(8).
• Small arms ammunition (up to .75 caliber and shotgun shells of any gauge) must be packaged in a fiber (such as cardboard), wood, plastic, or metal box specifically designed to carry ammunition and declared to your airline.

You cannot use firearm magazines or clips for packing ammunition unless they completely enclose the ammunition.
