Pdogs & coyote make for a looong day.

A pal and I hit a new ranch packed full of pdogs yesterday. Rancher was happy to say go any place on the property and shoot all you can *PS* Ill give you $100 for the last one shot*....hahaha funny guy I said, "you know that will never happen since you cant kill them all, just like shooting coyotes, more just move in". We can shoot everyday as far as he was concerned, very nice guy!
Of course on top of that we have anytime access for coyote as well as pdogs.
Started shooting at 730am to 610pm with them looking like we didn't touch them.
Seems 4pm was the witching hour also, they popped out late afternoon like whiskers on yer chin, not a shot made them run & duck. Odd thing was that from 7-3 or so they ran like crazy diving under, then late day you couldnt make them go under! We would shoot for 2hrs then move, 2sq miles of them and looking like wheat blowing in the wind when we came over a rise, just thousands of them. Lots of young ones they were not fresh pups, those will pop out in a few weeks and be even more. Adults are big and FAT, nice thunk when you hit them.
My Savage build, 24", 1/14" tw er shaw bbl, suppressed, 50g vmax w/748 ran 357 rounds my pal shot as many using 3 rigs, we spotted each other on & off all day.
After I got home at 8pm I let a rancher know Id be out on coyotes. Removed a big heavy mangey male at 95 yds, darn its partner made the escape.
Home about 1230pm and dead tired, BUT a great day!

100s of these laying in pieces.

KEEP IT UP 5SPD LIKE TO READ YOUR STORY'S IT DOES LOOK LIKE A FUN DAY OF SHOOTING

You guys are killing me!! I have another couple of weeks before we go on our assault.
That does give me time to work on my new 17 Remington rig that showed up. Rig should weigh about 30 pounds, make spotting for myself easy.

I see you are shooting out of the truck bed. Might have to try that to stay mobile. Any negatives?

Pretty stable, even in the WY breezes that come and go, high enough to see everything especially those in slight low spots you cant see when lower on a ground table. Its nice not to have to pull it out and reset up after we move like my pals does with his table. I can set it on the ground as well when I have to.

[QWe get on high spots in the middle of the town and stay all day most of the time. But I can see the merits in using the truck bed. 5spd-

I've noticed that behavior before, its a big social event/party in the late afternoon, earlier they're easily spooked. Sunset periods can be very active at times.

Check your state laws, some don't allow shooting from a vehicle.

So envious.

I have made numerous trips to Northern Cali to help out the locals with the Belding's ground squirrel problem. Lots of fun, lots of rounds downrange, but I need to do a PG hunt.

Help

Ps, shooting from a vehicle here is a no-no. I've seen shooting platforms in the back of pickups with RV jacks, so they can elevate the platform an inch or 2 from the pu.

Have fun

Mike

I shot Beldins in Cerdaville for 15 yrs when I live in Chico. Back then everyone had attached vehicle platforms and the DF&G never enforced that law until around 2002 when the anti hunters complained in force during the squirrel shoot week. We all had to revise the portables that you had attached to the trucks, then drop legs and raise it or pull out from under it, but still be up high thus not attached to the truck.
DF&G here said no problem doing so on private property for p-dogs. All predators/pests can be shot from a vehicle out here.
Ive had 2 wardens stop over the years just to see how I was doing shooting them.

Its probably very similar to TX- If you are an approved agent of the landowner (have authorization) totally legal to shoot from a vehicle any species considered a nuisance species without season, permits or license. They however frown heavily on shooting FROM a road or right-of-way. Always best to check first.

thats great 5 speed. Ive shot three times already this year up in Ranchester. Snow this morning though.

Had a place to shoot along a road and warden stopped and told the landowner he could not shoot from his vehicle. That was in Sheridan.

Wyoming state law is to have both feet on the ground when shooting, no shooting from a vehicle on public property.

Private property has an entirely different set of rules.

@5spd I too have noticed a witching hour a couple times over my 20 or so years of shooting PDs. They just wouldn't go down--coulda caught em with a fishing net. Both times for me were around 5 or 6 in the evening just before rain and wind moved in. I've always wondered if there was something to it or just dumb luck. Only the people that have seen it believe it.

Spent a whole day last year in one spot....did not move all day. By mid to late afternoon, they were coming out faster than you could shoot them and you wouldn't scare them back into the hole. Actually got pretty selective about shooting. Utterly amazing.
