Paul Harvey 1965

I remember being on lunch with Dad and a bunch of his welder/pipefitter buddies at a power plant shut down back in the 80s. I was a permit hand (union job) so keeping my mouth shut was in my best interest. Anyway, young millwright came in about half way thru lunch break. We were all listening to Paul Harvey. Mr. millwright went over to change the radio station. That poor guy bout got his ass whupped on the spot. Those welders promised him they would find him hanging from the top of a boiler with welding lead around his neck if he didn't promptly put that station back.
Hell i was only 19 then. I thought I was about to witness some serious bloodshed.
We only missed about 5 seconds of Harvey. Never saw that millwright again.
Good old days. Great memories. Damn sure educational. Oh... and don't mess with a bunch of old cranky ass pipefitter/welders. Probably not going to be a good outcome.

You know, Denzel Washington (who I have a high opinion of) was briefly interviewed recently Apparently media had pissed him off about something. He said you know, I would Tell somebody that doesn't watch the news that they're uninformed. I would now tell somebody that watches the news that are misinformed. The media is so damn busy being 1st, that honesty takes second place. 1st before honesty. What's wrong with this picture?
Television is the Greatest Mind Control Invention Ever Created

I always liked Paul Harvey. I also liked his show "The Rest of the Story" written by his son. He was an interesting fellow. He had a ranch in Colorado and admired Cleveland Amory the animal rights activist. He also was enchanted with Jimmy Carter and his wife. He touted him a lot. He was an entertaining man and I enjoyed listening to him in real time along with watching television shows like The Virginian, Chyanne and Gunsmoke. There wasn't much blood and guts. No swearing and lurid sex scenes but our Nation was in upheaval and the "counterculture was about to be vaulted to relevance by the various media.
Red Skelton did a tribute to the Pledge of Allegiance explaining every word and it is more relevant today than it ever was. God Bless.

I too grew up in the 50's. I often yearn for this or that from the 'good ole days'.

I think what we see is the result of population growth, increasing % of the population living in urban areas and various technologies enabling people to live disconnected from what it takes for daily living.

The conflicts brought on by these 'environmental' changes are not unique to the United States.

I never listened to him religously when I was young, and don't know that I ever heard this particular broadcast, so thank you for sharing it now. He was a visionary and had already read between the lines in 1965.

This is right on. I think when the "Big Conflict" comes, it will be between rural and urbanites. I'm betting on the rural folks.
Buckle up - it's going to be a bumpy ride.

Like Leno, Harvey was an old car nut. But unlike Leno, he didn't retain a team of pro restorers, he restored them almost singlehandedly, cars like 1930s Lincolns and Packards and such.

Ever hear his son, who at one time continued "The Rest Of The Story" series? Uncanny how his voice and delivery was virtually indistinguishable from the old man's. I thought I was hearing a replay of old broadcasts.

Believe it or not, Paul Harvey's radio show was played at work over the PA system for all (about 120 employees) to listen. This was back in the early 1960's, and I was naïve enough to believe that everyone shared these beliefs.

THANK YOU FOR SHARING!

Alex
