I never used a Blackstar barrel but I heard the same thing. The choke didn't make the barrels shoot any better and worse in a lot of cases. So I guess my info is "hearsay". I think that making a good barrel is still a black art that no-one has a good handle on yet. But I would put my money on a barrel that has been hand lapped and is smooth and dimensionally consistent from front to back. On the other hand I've seen barrels that looked like they were finished with a corncob that shot really great. Dunno?Shortgrass, Eddie, and Stan plus a couple others. Don't you feel smarter after reading this thread?
Deathstar used LW blanks which were a precipitating hardness steel. Kinda like 17-4. Deathstar's process worked on medical equip., but never made a barrel shoot competitively.
