palma stocks

Looking to build a palma rifle and try out some long range prone matches. What stocks do you prefer and why, Looking for specific likes and dislikes not just buy a this cuz i use it. All input is appreciated

I do not personally own one, but the majority of PALMA shooters in this area use Jim Cloward stocks.

What are you shooting now? Are you a CMP/NRA Service Rifle shooter? If so the easy button is to get a Tube Gun stock as that will be the easiest transition from the AR15 to a prone gun.

Where are you located? Best to get behind some and see for yourself.

I have One McMillian Prone, ( Anschutz Prone copy) I have one H&H Prone made by Robertson, A Anschutz 2013 stock with a Panda centerfire action in it, and 4 Tube gun stocks.

Your best bet is to go to a match with your coat and glove and ask people to just sling up with their rifle. What someone says is their most important feature might not be what makes it work for you. For instance, the tube style stocks are becoming popular but I cannot get comfortable behind one, my .22lr is on a tube. I really like my MasterClass stock but I cannot tell you why it shoots so well, for me. Honestly the best way is sling up behind several and see which feels comfortable. Also the action you use can dictate the stock, ex. RPA Quadlock cannot fit in a tube, so there are all sorts of things to figure out with a Palma rifle.

Currently shootin service rifle and have a AR space gun as well. Closest match to me is 2.5 hrs. Got a few other projects to finish first but im starting to collect ideas.

Tube Gun Stock hands down then. It will match your Space gun and Service rifle....Been down this road many times.

Check out Pacific tool and gage for there special on Remington Short actions combo pack. Call Gary at GotXring.com to order a stock.

I have some small items for sale if you want to get started putting stuff together.

Just stripped 700 down for the action. My smallbore guns wear big wood stocks so im familiar with both. Im off work for a few weeks with a hernia operation so im going to true and blue print a few recievers in the next few weeks. Does the sight hieght above the barrel have much effect if you have a slight cant with a tube gun. In the process now of building 2 xtc guns on elesio chasis. Cant take an evil semi into ny ya know. May be interested in some parts depending what ya have.

I have 3 prone rifles with Masterclass stocks and couldn't be happier. All shoot better than I ever will shoot, and they are tight, fitted, solid, quality wood stocks. If you're looking for a work of art and not a space age piece of milled aluminium, Alex Sitman is a master craftsman. It's hard to describe but I like the robust feel of a heavy wood stocked gun. Did I mention I own a space gun also? Almost forgot.......because I never shoot it.

Have had ARs, Eliseo Tube Gun stocks, wood stocks, you-name-it stocks. They all shoot well once you fiddle with them. The tube gun stocks make it easier but I, personally, am more comfortable with wood. Chesebro Rifles has some off-set wood stocks (a la Mastin) where the butt stock is off-set to the right a tad on a right handed stock so that the action/sights are better aligned with your shooting eye. Tried someone else's at a match and loved it but was already invested with what I have. As above, attend a match and ask to try others rifles. In the end you will make yourself comfortable with what ever you choose one way or another!

Yep. Here is a Mc Millian Prone stock that is my back up Palma Rifle. Some day Im going to change the adjustable cheek piece hardware to the one that Steve and Shirley McGee sell.

Yup. I've probably been using a McMillan prone stock for 15 to 20 years. I am a minimalist, in terms of adjustments, so I do not, and have not done a lot of fiddling around with it, although I should. I ended up removing the adjustable butt plate assembly (aluminum) and replacing with older Anschutz plastic spacers and pad to meet Canadian (International) weight restrictions while they were still in effect.

They are quite comfortable

I added a tub a butt plate to mine and its heavy but has all the adjustment I could want

I would suggest the Elisio tube stock. I have two of them and probably will have another in the future. They are very adjustable. It can take some time, but you should be able to get the stock to fit you. In full disclosure, I've never slung up in a wood stocked rifle, but I don't think I'm giving up anything. The aluminum stocks won't win a beauty contest- there are some beautiful wood stocked rifles out there, but they can shoot very well. There was (it may still be there) a photo on Gary's website of the Leech and Wimbleton winners from Perry 2014. Both were using his stocks.

I use a McMillan prone stock, and I am very happy with it. It did take some getting used to it. I transitioned from service rifles. So naturally I leaned toward a tube gun but I just didn't care for it. I sold it and started getting parts together, and I am currently working on my second rifle now. (You know for a back up)

Some one did mention the action type does have some influence on your options. Honestly you just have to try them. Some guys use the aluminum Anschutz stock (2213?). I would love to have on to match my smallbore rifle but i just don't have the extra money right now.

Carl Bernosky has a number of patterns that are well suited for this venue. He has made a couple wooden stocks for me that were a variation on the Cloward style. He also has the Masterclass series available. His delivery time is usually something a shooter can live with.

Being primarily an XTC shooter with Service rifle for years and more recently spacegun, the Eliseo Tube Chassis is THE way to go for me. The ergonomics, fit and feel are virtually identical. I have an Anschutz in one of his chassis, .308 Palma rifle, 6BR mid range prone gun, 6.5-284 and .223 Palma rifle in one too. I'm a big fan of his stocks.
