pair of savage 5 r 308 velocity difference ?

Both myself and a friend picked up a savage model 10 with the 5r barrel a few months ago. I am a savage fan and a 308 fan so off we go through our normal break in. It appeared that these rifles both like 150 gr bullets in fact all of the 150 and 165-168 gr bullets will drop in around a 1/2 inch or so at the 100 yd. range. rl-15 ,varget 4895, 8208xbr. Yesterday we decide we are going to work on hunting loads for this fall deer season. It seems that both of these rifles shoot best with bullets seated .005-.010 off the rifling (sinclair tool) . the only difference is his rifle has a slightly longer throat . around .025 longer than mine. We grab the chrony off to the bench 150gr accubonds 44 gr 8208xbr lapua brass fed 210 . His first 5 shot group mv were 2944,2956,2933,2930,2919. Better velocity than I expected. No pressure signs all is well. Here is what I found perplexing. I shoot the identical load in my rifle and 5 shot mv are 2799,2813,2856,2836,2808. what is hard for me to understand is in theory his bullets are seated further out(longer throat) and in my mind should increase case volume. I was expexcting the opposite mv. seems to me seating the bullets deeper would decrease case capacity and result in higher pressures and hugher mv.Perhaps someone could shed some light Thanks in advance.......Huntrrr

Well first off no two barrels are alike as you have found out the throat is not the same, try some of the fired brass in each others rifle you may find the chambers are of different size.
Did you load all the ammo our did you each load your own ammo.

Thanks for the reply Yes I loaded all the ammo . I realize no to barrels are the same I just found it interesting the way the numbers worked out. I was surprised at the velocity he was achieving Gonna inch up till accuracy falls of or see some pressure indications. I didnt measure the group I shot but would say its in the low 3's for the 5 shot group. Not complaining awsome accuracy for a $700.00 stock rifle. Dont think the deer will tell the difference.

I guess the most surprising thing is it looks like 3000-3100 fps with a 24 inch barrel and 150 gr bullets is a real possibility. Never got those mv out of my other 308's.

Not sure about 8208xbr have a jug of it but never got a chance to try it, at 44gr. you may be close to max psi if not over.
Back injury have not been able to shoot this year
If you would like to try a different load, IMR3031 42-44gr. = 2800-2900fps
You my find your best accuracy is at a slower velocity 2500-2600fps
By the way I'm the true Savage "NUT" have nine yes 9 Savage rifles in 308, not to mention the other calibers on hand !

I want to know the secret to 2900 fps in a 308 ?

It's called VARGET, or N150, behind a 155gn bullet.

I have not seen that yet.

Go to a Palma or F/TR match... 2950-3050 is 'standard'. Granted those are warm loads out of long barrels, but they've only been doing that for a few decades.

I'm thinking the difference in mv may be a result of a tighter chamber . What is most amazing to me is the following day I began loading my rifle up in 1/2 gr. incremennts from 44 gr.8208 all the way to 45.5 gr. Velocity reached 3096,3079,3071 on the three shots loaded at 45.5 gr. I still show no sign of pressure no indications on the primer. no excessive case head expansion no sticky bolt . Just never got near these velocity's in a 308 with 150 gr. accubonds. Maybe its the the 8208xbr because I have always shot Varget,w748,IMR 4895,rl 15. I'm not going to keep pushing for more velocity my groups at 45.gr appear to be in the 3 tenths range just eyeballing them and still breaking the 3000fps mark. Just wondered if anyone else has seen similar results from a 24 inch barrel. Thanks for your input in advance ........Huntrrr
