Painting my house

moved to Alabama ten years ago, bought a house with shingles and painted siding, house needed a roof, I decided on steel (it will out live me) needed windows, decided on vinyl replacement(they will out live me) House was getting close to needing paint and I hated the color, Looked at good paint and a pro, then good paint and me doing it, THEN a nice man came over from a company that has been doing vinyl siding for 45 years and decided on vinyl siding ($5300) guarantied for life, guess what? IT WILL OUT LIVE ME.

Years ago I bought a Wagner airless sprayer to paint a standalone shop, it did a great job. Attach a hose that dunks into the paint can, or use attached quart container. Paint went on thick and held up well for many years. Very useful and faster for irregular surfaces such as shutters, outdoor furniture, etc.

Bought a little fixer upper as our retirement house, about 20 years ago. Redid just about everything. When I did the roof, I used 50 year shingles. I replaced all the exterior trim with PVC board. Tore off all the cedar siding and used cement siding board. The paint job is 19 years old and still looks new. Exterior wood moves, water gets in the cracks. The paint peels and the wood rots.
A good professional painter is worth his weight in gold. A “nephew” paint job is risky.

The nephew is no acne faced kid, he's older and painted houses with my brother in law who was a painter but lives in another town. In between jobs he was available so my wife called on him. I do get what you're saying I just wasn't clear on his age and level of experience, still I would have used a painter that's done some houses in the neighborhood but here we are.

Well, that’s a whole different thing! Let him do his thing. Just stay off the ladders!

A lady from the worlds oldest profession was sitting at a hotel bar, when a well dressed gentleman sat down beside her. After a few drinks the lady said to the gentleman " I'll do anything you want for $400" The gentleman got out $400 and laid it on the bar in front of her and said "paint my house"!
A short while later, she arrived at the house, crawled up to the ridge, hiked up her skirt and took a good, long, bloody piss.
Crawling back down, she was heard muttering, "I get the weirdest johns some times."

Caulk n paint, caulk n paint, make a carpenter what he ain't.

That said, I once painted a house (wood frame) in CNY for an old gent who actually had a tree growing out of the side of the house. Yes, prep was a challenge and I used a power washer and spent a LOT of time scraping. I sprayed that house that hadn't seen paint in 75 years. The rental place kept renting the same broken sprayer to me. I eventually wrote the letter that got the guy there fired. Anyhow, I know I would have died trying to brush that place because it absorbed primer like a dry sponge. In the end it came out ok for an old wreck of a place.

Now the gun part.

When it came time for payment the old guy wanted to give me a Stevens in 25-25 Stevens. It was a walnut hill. I needed the cash and passed. He died a year later and I found out the grandson sold that gun for $100.

Even more interestingly, several years after that a high school girl was murdered at school by a boyfriend. I did the death notification to her parents. I walked in and the dad was the guy I had gotten fired for renting that crap sprayer. I had a moment when I thought he would recognize me. Turned out he didn't. That notification was the hardest I ever did. The good part about it was he and his whole family eventually ended up in church, friends of our family (I never told him about the paint thing) and they came through that terrible crime healed and healthier on the whole, thanks to God.

Morals of the story:

Paint sprayers are a pain if not maintained and cleaned. Never get so broke you need the cash more than a 44 1/2 Walnut Hill. Be nice, even when getting someone rightfully fired.

I was going to post that one. Jerry Van Dyke used it in the 1970s. Except she said "I'll do anything you can say in three words for $100."

My wife hired my nephew to paint our house and it's been a fiasco renting a paint sprayer from Home Depot. Either the sprayers aren't working and the mechanic is out on leave or other sprayers are days overdue! This should have been done by last Friday if I had the sprayer.

Other rental places don't have sprayers and refer me to HD. It a big 2 story house but doable in 2 days but looks like I may have to get out the rollers.

My other post about falling off the ladder was when I was removing some lights to get ready for painting (feeling a lot better now).

We had a chance to get a professional but she wanted to help out the nephew with the job but it's wearing on my nerves. I don't want to reload during this down time so I don't screw something up.

Just wanted to rant and get this off my chest. Thanks for looking if you did, if not no harm no foul.
Its cheaper to just buy an airless sprayer that to rent it that long, you can always sell it when your done if you don't want to keep it.

I used a GRACO and it was miserable the whole time I used it. As long as it kept primed I was good, it it lost prime I had to pull the hose out and pour paint in the hose. The out side got rolled and brushed which kept over spray off my stained wrap around porch anyway.
My Graco's have all worked flawless, never had a problem with them and most commercial painters use Graco if not then Spaytec.

I saw a guy in the Marine Corps paint a VW bug with 4 cases of yellow Krylon spray. He had it up on metal milk crates and started in the morning. Light even coats, took his time and finished in the afternoon. It was nice and smooth all over. I didn't look at it up close but from 6 feet away and more looked like a factory paint job. Don't know how well it stood up but if he turned around and sold it it would have fetched more money compared to how it looked before.

My best friend hired a shoestyring relative that needed a job. He got a 2000.00 starter check plus my friend bought all the materials himself. In the end he got 4500.00 for 3 days of work and then left the state. His dad had to pour the concrete and make the table tops and bases. His son never paid him.I would gather to say the kid was a druggy.
