Painted stock

I have a LRPV Savage rifle that shoots really well, but I always hated the color of the stock, which as you probably know is flat black. I recently saw a rifle for sale by motobtcr that I really liked the color of. I asked him about it and he said it was a Manners stock and the color was molded in. Since my stock is an H.S. Precision I didn't see any need to buy a new stock, so I figured how hard could it be to sponge paint a similar pattern on mine.

I bought some ocean sponges from a crafts store and some white and gray spray cans of paint from Lowes. Removed the barrel and action and a couple quick wraps of painters tape and I was ready to start. Sprayed some of the gray on a piece of cardboard and gently touched the sponge to the paint and then the stock. Followed that with the white and you see the results below. $12 and about 10 minutes of time is all it took.

Looks great. What kind of paint? Did you need to do any prep work to the stock to make the paint stick?
I also have a couple of ugly black stocks that could use something like that.

It was so easy I looked for more black stock rifles in my safe to paint but realized I didn't have any more.

I used Lowes house brand of spray paint called Valspar. The white paint was primer. The gray was an indoor/outdoor paint. I think both cans were oil based because water didn't get the paint out of the sponges.

I prepared the stock by washing with a warm wash cloth and Dawn soap. The HS Precision stocks have a lot of texture to them for the paint to stick to. A smooth inexpensve plastic stock might not work as well, but I'm only guessing on that.

I think the key is to not get too much paint on the sponge. I got the sponges at Michaels craft store...Martha Stewart brand, I'm slight ashamed to say. I will do more paint jobs this same way. Next time I will get a variety of sponges, meaning some with bigger holes and some with more grain patterns. I think next time I will do larger areas of each color so there is less of a splatter pattern and more of a large spot pattern. I will also try more colors.
