Package Mishaps

Ordered a barrel several years ago and the mailman delivered an EMPTY tube.
Obviously it was never found.

Moral of the story ?
ALWAYS pay shipping insurance unless you can live with the loss of the value.

Well, tomorrow I am expecting my Pelican V800 rifle case from Midway. I don't expect shipping or packaging damage to a shipping container...buy imagine the irony.

Case arrived ok but the cardboard exterior did not fare so well. At one end, the cheap "single" piece of packaging tape gave up and the end was open. Fortunately, the case was a snug fit in the box. The other end looked like rats were fighting over the corners to hack their way inside. Brought to you by, the shipping dept at Midway.

My gunsmith made the unfortunate decision to send my Savage barreled action back via USPSin a heavy duty tube I had initially sent There was damage at one end and the bolt was missing. Interestingly, the end cap was still in place but to me, was doctored. he felt really bad about his decision but I told him don't sweat it. I had an extra target action bolt. I did not even bother filing a claim. I would have been more successful mining gold from the ass of a Grizzly bear.

I learned to ask specific questions about packing when buying a gun that gets shipped. When it comes to buying used gun (assume no factory box), I finally settled on making arrangements to have a hard case shipped from Amazon to seller. What's $30-$50 to ensure you get what you want. Why you ask???

Once I had a revolver show up loose in oversized box... no case, no bubble wrap, no nothing but lots of empty space. Hell, not even wrapped in old sock with old newspaper wadded up to fill the empty space in box.

Once I had a beautiful vintage Sako with custom Fabian thumbhole stock show up in single thickness box with a single wrap of miniature bubble wrap. The forearm cap and pistol grip cap both were snapped off. The bull barrel had punctured through the box and was nicely rounded by rubbing steel and concrete along its travels to me. It just bounced around loose and wild inside and outside the box. FFL accepted shipment without even noticing damage to box or loose pieces of rifle floating around in box!

Luckily, I had requested Seller get insurance for UPS. Here's the SCAM... UPS automatically denies all claims... Burden of Proof is yours. Lots of photos with clear evidence of damage and still took 2-3 months for Seller to collect. UPS even tried to dismiss claim stating that their inspector in my location had inspected the firearm and found no issues. This was blatant fabrication...I was in possession of the rifle and no one from UPS has called to arrange to see it.

That's the part that really gets your goat when they lie and cheat to avoid paying the claim. So what good is insurance if it's not going to pay for damages ?

I'm bored so here is my story. Empty box was repackaged , made it to my addressIMG_0289.JPG
by way of Hawaii, filed claim with Post Office and was denied!

This is not a new occurrence but it has immensely increase. I think the in-flock of convicted workers has its negative effects.

Finally got my box from Midsouth. Been stuck at the UPS facility since 7-27-20. Delivery date constantly changing, but never seemed to leave Aurora, CO. Called Midsouth and told them what was going on. Must have put a fire under them cause it arrived 3 days later. Looked like someone was using it as a stool or stepstool.

Good thing too as some of the stuff I had ordered is not available now!!!

Well, here we are again...this is the fifth consecutive package traveling the USPS Magical Mystery Tour and the tracking has stated, on vehicle, out for delivery. No arrival. If history is repeatable, it will continue on tour until it actually arrives in another 2 or 3 days. I feel no sorrow for a business in the red that does not know how to conduct itself.

Sometimes not packaging an item properly can result in shipping container damage beyond the control of the shipper. On the same I day I received these 2 boxes containing bullets. The one on the left came from an un-named forum member. It contained 10 boxes of Berger 22 cal bullets no longer available. I held my breath as I opened it.
The box on the right came from Bluecollarreloading. Nuff said.

Just maybe there was a milkie bone in there and the postal puppy needed a snack.

Received my lesson today, don’t order a scope [cheap I admit] with 2000 bullets on the same order. Hole in both boxes, 4 pillows, 2 flat.

The most upsetting here was a Federal Mahr bench snap gage off evilbay. Seller did an OK job packaging but wasn't secure enough for the circus called USPS. Gage made it through but the virtually mint, boxed corner oak factory case looked like someone hit it with a 3lb hammer. Just very sad.

I have been shipping priority mail
ever since going in business. I wont
say they are flawless, but pretty close.
Since the covid problem, I have only
had the one package that went to Hi. that took
several days to many, but it finally arrived.
If the entire postal service was as good as my
route carrier, the system wouldnt be in trouble.

You're going to have to add my package to the list. The vice I ordered from you has been about 70 miles from my house since Sunday and hasn't moved.

Every picture in this thread is an example of inadequate packaging. While the inflated bubbles are light, they don't keep heavy things from moving around. I've quit buying bullets from forum members unless I really trust them. it is just too awkward to say "you didn't package them right, it's your responsibility." And don't get me started on insurance. It's not insurance if it takes me 10 hours of frustration to recover $100. I don't work for $10 an hour and work shouldn't be frustration. Tape is my insurance. Package things so they can't move around and tape them up.

That is the beauty of flat rate boxes. No need to use light weight packaging material. Stuff paper in there until nothing can move, tape it up real well, use a barcoded label and it will get there 99.99999% of the time. The exceptions are plane crashes and Truck wrecks with fire.

Ive started using empty water or softdrink bottles to fill space and pack heavy things. Most of these bottles weigh near nothing and are darn near bulletproof.
