PA might come out of the 19th Century!

This is so biased that its insulting. So you had a few bad apples that happened to be semi auto shooters, what happens when you have an incident with a muzzleloader? do then ban all guns? This seems very short sighted for your club to do this. My range has over 2k members and virtually no incidents ever, with semi, single shot or muzzle loaders because the vast majority enforce the rules. Actions like this really hurt the gun community, instead of punishing the violators you attack the group. Seems like a common thing to do these days.
Those violators were banned from club. What hurts the gun clubs is errant rounds leaving the club property. Since the single shot rule (2002) we have had zero visits by the State Police. Years previous we had some property owners downrange claim errant shots came from the club despite the fact the range is at the base of a tall ridge.
We are a private club and therefore have the freedom to be biased.

I hunt with AR's and bolt guns depending upon what I'm hunting & where. Never been an issue, also we hunt Sundays because a lot of people (those that actually work) work 6 days a week. They also need to be able to get out, Sunday is your own land or land you are invited to hunt or state land. Banning magazine useage at a range is to me pretty short sighted, are you loading 1911's single shot? Or AR's, both could be dangerous to a bystanders health. It reminds me of a directive that came down this year from the person heading up the Michigan Hunter Safety program. Rifles were to be loaded single shot and no one was allowed to carry (instructors). Not only is that insulting to the youngsters that have completed 2 evenings and a day of class, testing, and range time, but also to the instructors. To think that someone is going into the field with only the chamber loaded is a joke. Teach safety , banning semi-auto fire only gives fuel to the anti's. The situation is corrected by talking to the individuals and showing them proper procedure. Believe me, it works much better.
To the best of my knowledge the PGC will not permit hunter safety class students to handle loaded weapons during the class anymore. They have dummied rifles and shotguns for them to handle, but they are inoperative. We do a class every summer with certified instructors and PGC officers and take them through a "is it safe to shoot ?" course. The current trend is to conduct the test over the internet with virtually no hands-on experience. Blame it on trial lawyers, not us. We are just a small club of mostly deeply rooted traditional values folk who are just trying to preserve the club for at least one more generation of hunters.

Careful Majestic you might get labeled a commando. It seems like many Pa hunters are of the mindset that because you have a semi auto rifle that you will undoubtedly keep pulling the trigger until your empty and that because you have a semi your shooting skill is sub par.

I was just down there and talked with several hunters, a gunsmith and one shooter. PA is still in the 18th century, and what LHS suggests might work, though i caution that one should load the single cartridge into the breech and then seat the paper patch bullet to the case.... ;)

;) haha that's good advice for our flintlock season :DD

Maybe one day snert, maybe one day we will catch up

Sorry but I can't agree at all with limiting a range to single shot only.

The title of this thread is "PA might come out of the 19th Century" but this type of thinking puts it back to the 18th Century!

;DD yes it does

I think the Chance of hunting deer on Sundays on Public land would be slight. There seems to be some strange happens to the once great deer herd there. I Lived in Pa. for 38 years from birth til 2009. I can say from My experience they did a disservice in 2000-2001 to the herd, by the time I left the deer in my local area were all limited to living in gate communities with the N.Y and N.J. expatriates.
I worked as a Body shop manager for the last 10 years there and State Farm bragged at meetings they were doing all they could to reduce deer collisions. At least they got what they wanted......

P.S. Most of the antelope I have shot here were on Sundays after Church and a good family meal....so Sunday hunting is possible !!!!

Yeah I know, I can't wait to be able to really sink my teeth in my AR and hunt groundhogs on Sunday. . .. Maybe someday.

So, those violators were banned, yet everybody else still lives under the oppression created by your rule?

We are a private club and therefore have the freedom to be biased.

Care to mention the name of your club?

I wish they would tune into modern times, and allow the use of air guns, at least for small game hunting.

I would think that PA. would have relaxed on some of these issues. Even here just South of you guys, in "communist MD", we can now hunt on quite a few Sundays.... with guys "blasting away with semi's" for good measure ::)

I just finished reading several pages here and must admit I am surprised by some of the comments. I live in Md. (not very gun friendly) and we can hunt on some sundays and we can use rifles in most counties, even semi autos. I hunt on public land and have not had any problems with others hunters.

For a man that works 5-6 days a week Sunday hunting would be great. I am lucky in that I am able to hunt when I want.

I am 66 and just bought my first ar, a DPMS prairie panther, that I will use for predator hunting. This after shooting single shot coopers for many years.

My feeling is that we should try to get more people interested in our sport to help fight the antis. I am in favor of autos and Sunday hunting, after church of course.

Yep, shooting/hunting after church sure beats sitting around watching a bunch of steroid eating crazies beat each other up for a piece of pigskin...

I don't see these old out dated regs being changed anytime soon. The last "big" jump forward was the allowing us to use crossbows and that was a little while ago (I don't use one but its nice to have the option). There seems to be a tunnel vision by these guys that think that since THEY don't use it the they don't see any reason for it. I kinda sucks lol

I am native PA. Moving to NY where there are more cows than people 28 years ago, I discovered two things:

It was slug only here...dumbest thing I had ever heard so I bought a contender and whacked 19 deer in 15 years

I THOUGHT I knew everything and had the skinny on huntin as a PA hunter...boy was i wrong...so many more opportunities here in "liberal" NY than in PA.

Been hunting with an air rifle for years now, hunt grouse and never see another hunter, and in 18 years of rabbit hunting never saw another hunter...and the season opened in October and closed Feb 28! Shot rabbits (and a flying grouse) with a Ruger MK2 Govnt model. Shoot more groundhogs than I ever did in PA. Even a few deer with a bow. Now shooting deer with a LR rifle and "gasp" an inline ML with a scope. Sold my stupid flintlock for $50 and thought I got the best end of the deal.

Yes, I may go back to PA, (suppressors legal and CCW easier) but gosh, the hunting scene there is certainly 19th century.

When talking to my brother, two years my senior, about me being excited for the opportunity to use my AR for Chucks his reply was "why do you need a semi for Groundhogs?" Typical, I don't use it so why does anyone else need it! He jumped on the X-bow when legalized and hunts all the time with it after shooting a monster last year! Before this Archers were evil as they shot all the Buck before rifle season! He is the only one that matters, liberal like!, and if it does not fit his agenda it's wrong. We know the type. I could see him being a problem with a semi auto rifle after seeing him in the duck blind with an 1100! He has committed many game law violations over the years that I will not post on the www but is concerned that I will empty a 30 round mag into a Groundhog! Jeez! Just don't get it, pig headed!
