What caliber would you suggest with the following guide lines?

1) Non magnum based like 338 LM
2) Brass either store bought or real easy to make
3) Good barrel life. I am not in search for high speed and low barrel life

With what you suggest what rifle action?

Oh and I do not want a bench gun

I will not be doing any hard core competeing with it as I have too much trigger time due as it is. but there are a few of us that like to get together and see just what we can do. pay off is usually bragging rights and dinner.

I was looking at the 6.5 x 284 and 6br but did not know if maybe the 6br varients might be a bit better than the br at further distance.

Oh and what about the 6.5x55

6BR does just fine under the right conditions well out past 1000. I have even been playing with it at one mile.

One old gunsmith and F-class shooter I met last year has a great philosophy... "You need not look any newer than 100 years to find cartridges that can do everything you want, including winning matches" and he could not have been more correct about the good old 6.5X55 Swedish Mauser. It does it all. There isn't game in North America that hasn't been taken with one and there probably isn't a competition that hasn't been won with one at some point either. It is fantastic at 1000 yards. It works ok in a 308 bolt face but you may want to open it up a hair for perfect extraction/ejection.

Barrel life is excellent and recoil is moderate. Accuracy can be outstanding with the right combination of bits and pieces.

6.5X55 Swedish Mauser if you are looking for barrel life. If you are after accuracy you need a 6.5X55 Swedish Mauser! I know, you are after the long range accuracy, then you definitely need a 6.5X55 Swedish Mauser!

my 1000 yarder I'm building is going to be a 7mm-08
low recoil and good balistics
as far as action check out one of stillers predator actions, they use a rem 700 trigger and footprint and from what i've seen and herd about stiller actions they are more than worth the money

There are many, many, many very good shooters shooting 308 at 1000 yards and tons of information on the cartridge and gun construction. You should get 3500+ rounds from a barrel and will just love it. My Krieger barrel has 2200+ rounds out of it shooting F-Class,rather fast firing) and still shoots .25 MOA.

Components are like buying parts for a Chevy or Ford - available every where.
