1000 yard caliber, low recoil, long barrel life

For the 6.5mm's the 6.5X47 or the 260 Rem and the 260AI would be a good inbetween low recoil and pretty darn good barrel life. In the 6mm's a Dasher or a 6XC would be a good choice as well. The new 105gr Hybrid has opend alot of doors for long range shooting in my eye's for the 105class bullets.

Like the Forum Boss says Sherri Gallagher did pretty well with the 260 at Camp Perry for NRA highpower week at 200,300 and 600. John Widden has been shooting the straight 243 with plain ole 105VLD's for Long Range week with great success for several years now.
Ah so many choices.... almost too many!
Im waiting for German to throw in his 30'06.... as he says... its never a mistake.

Best of luck in your choice.

Yes .... where are you German? It's time to enter the good ole '06 into the contest. (My old Winchester M1917/P'14 .300 H&H F Class bitzer has acquired an M1917 bolt and is being rebarrelled with a el-cheapo' Spanish Bergara 1-10" twist barrel in .30-06 with your 'Serengeti' reamer design.)

On a long barrel life, low recoiling 1,000yd cartridge? Phew! What a choice these days. My own choice has been 6XC in this role, but other similar sixes, 6.5X47L, .260R, 6.5mm Hornady Creedmoor, 6.5X55mm - all suitable, all fit the bill, all great performers.

No mention of 7mm-08 Rem to date though. I wonder if this is becoming the most overlooked small to medium size cartridge with potential now that .260 Rem has been recognised? I've seen people do very well in all-ranges club F Class in the UK with the little seven used in magazine rifles that doubled up for tactical competitions.

Erik,

What is your reamer specs if you dont mind me asking? Also what action, barrel and stock?

.290" neck, .175" freebore.

F-Class Panda, Richards custom rifles "Lowrider" stock, Krieger 4 groove.

What rear bag are you using? I have the lowrider but it keeps coming up out of my rear bag. Im using protector small bunny ears. Im not sure which one to use.

I use the F-Class Edgewood bag with the small ears and 3/8" stitch width.
I use a SEB front rest, original not the NEO.

Hi Erik,
looking at your 1000yd "Rookie Group" if the spotting disc is 3 inch Diameter and there is a shot in the centre of it and the rest are around the edge of disc then the 7 shot group size would appear to be well under 2 inches ?
I also shoot a 30 inch barreled 6.5x47, I still prefer my 260 with lapua brass and 139gr Scenars.

TxBoy shot that group.

Keep in mind that it is F-Class, so shots are marked one at a time. So the group itself was bigger than 2", but never was a shot more than 1.5" away from the previous, but still they were all inside the 5" "X" ring.

Good Morning Erik,

I'm getting ready to do some load development with the 139 Scenars in my 260 with a 28" Criterion 8 twist Bull Barrel. Do you have any recommendations for me for a good powder/load to start with? I've tried a few of the Cor Bon 139's and she really likes them. I'll be starting off shooting at 600 yards, but eventually will stretch it out to 1000 once the new range is finished.

Thanks in advance for any info, Ken

*** THIS LOAD IS SAFE IN MY RIFLE, IT MAY NOT BE IN YOURS ***
My go to load for my "47" is 39.8 gr. N550 with the 139 gr. Scenars. With the 260 I would start at 39.0 gr. and work up from there.

The sweet spot for my "47" is 2930 fps. from a 31" barrel. I seat the Scenars .020" away from jam.

Good luck and let us know how it shoots.

Erik,

Thanks for the info. Now at least I have a place to start. I'll be sure to post my results after I hit the range which should be sometime next week.

You wouldn't have any inside info as to what load Cor Bon uses would you? Like I said, they really shoot well in my setup.

Thanks, Ken

Have you chronographed those loads? You could at least try to duplicate the velocity.

223 AR-15, cause you can put other uppers on it, in 223, shorter barrels. For the 1000 yd game, you want a 26" barrel with 1 in 6.5" rifling twist rate, 90 gr VLD Berger or Sierra bthp match bullets, a free float handguard, a $300 or so match trigger, a scope with a lot of vertical adjustment (or leave it zeroed at 1000 yds). Such AR 223's have been beating 308's for a while now. They've been beating everything at the 600 yd NRA matches for nearly 15 years.

If you can't get your hands on the N550, try H4350. A 2950 fps load with Scenar 123s and H4350 has proven extremely accurate for many guys. Less recoil, more easy to tune than the 140gr class bullets.

okay guys well it sounds like both the dasher and the x47 lapua are great choices...

the x47 lapua is optimal in the respect that there is a lot of companies making quality components for this caliber...ie load recipies, dies, brass, etc etc etc....

if i went with a wildcat such as the dasher where could i get custom dies made and how does one go about that?

I shot a 6.5x47L over the weekend and I am in love. It was in a tactical rig with only a fifteen power scope but I was able to make 100% hits at a 6" steel plates with about a 4-5 mph wind @600 yards. With very little recoil, made me want one really bad! The good fellow who let me shoot said he was running 123 Lapuas around 2930 I think. Im crazy about them now!

I got my 6 dasher Redding S bushing die set and modified oal case from Justin Whitley AR-X Enterprises 6mmAR.com

He had them in stock a couple months ago when I ordered mine.
