Other than CCI..what is considered the best Standard Velocity round?

I use CCI SV HP for squirrel hunting, but I'd like to have a plinking SV round since the CCI seems so hard to get. (and save my stash of the CCI)

Looking to buy a brick or two if I can.

I know all rifles are different, but overall, what's considered good?

Ohio Varmint Shooter,

It will be what you find. No one in my area has any rimfire. I like Win SV and HV in my 10-22. I would think any of the Major Co would do fine.

Your gun will tell you. Remington target and Remington subsonic shoot lights out in my 541T, but are all over in my 513T which adores T22. I prefer lead and wax over copper wash, but that is just me.

The answer is; the one that shoots the best out of your firearm.

If possible, what I would do is;

a. Buy a 50-round box of all the different manufactures you can/want.
b. Clean your rifle/pistol thoroughly.
c. Pick a distance (50 yards min, especially if test day has any breeze)
c. Shoot 15 fouling shots.
d. Shoot one 10 round string, followed by a second 10 shot string. If results are satisfactory, shoot another 10-shot string just to make sure it wasn't a fluke.
e. Th roughly clean the rifle and repeat for each brand/type of ammo.

Rimfires are like any other gun, some like Brand-A, while others like Brand-B and so on.

Once you find the one you like buy as much of that brand/LOT # you feel you'll want/need. If it's an auto loader, make sure it will function.

For my S & W model 41, the Wolf Match Target, Match Extra and Eley TENEX all shot the same at 50 yards. CCI Std Vel, Green-Tag and Yellow Box PMC Target were next. Federal just wouldn't function nor shoot worth a hoot. My pistol had a DOT scope so sighting was pretty consistent.

HTH,

Jim

Lotsa luck!! Went to Natchez website looking for Wolf Extra, that they had on sale in the monthly flyer, the ONLY 22 LR ammo available is birdshot!!! >:(

I know of a Boy Scout group that tried to order ammo for summer camp direct from their usual manufacturer, a 10k order. Was told they'd get it in six months. Basically, if you don't have any, you may be SOL until summer.

You can find all kinds of ammo on Gun Broker. It's gonna cost you but it can be had.
I've found that some places still have the $15/50rnd and up target ammo.

I'm the original poster.

Even if they were in stock, I'm not paying Eley (and similar) prices. I have enough rounds in the basement to get me through more than a year's worth of shooting. (I don't actually fire THAT many rounds in a year.)

Since I bought the 22 mid summer 2012, I have lots of rounds left over when I was trying to find out what shoots best in the rifle. It's quite a mix/match of stuff.

I'll just wait 12-18 months (until this crazy run on guns/ammo is over) to buy ammo.

On some sites, I've seen rimfire expected deliveries in the April to July time frame but they are not accepting backorders.

Wolf is probably the best bang for buck when you can get it. I'm like you Ohio I am waiting for this ammo frenzy to die down a bit before I buy.

I don't use Wolf but saw it at a local gunshop last week. It was 4.95 a box & he had a couple bricks but I didn't ask what they went for. Does that equate to a frenzy price?

4.95 a box is what it has been going for awhile. Funny how Wolf primers and centerfire is some of the cheapest stuff out there, and their 22lr is mid range on the price. Cabela's was 4.95 in September for Wolf.

As others have said, you need to test many kinds on equal footing to see which one your rifle likes best that is in the price range you are looking for. I shoot four position smallbore and will only shoot Eley Black Box through my Anschutz, but that is an all together different kind of shooting than the plinking you're looking for.
