Ordered Barrel

Just realized, I did forget to note:
If you’re building for a track toy, then my prior comments are irrelevant...

But to correlate back to rifles/motors/turbo/hot rods etc, , consider the provenance of what you’ve got. Imagine tearing down one of your classic Superior PPC rifles, to have it re-barreled to, say... 6.5Creed-less.
Sure, you’d have more ‘HP’ to keep up with the Joneses, but you’d be fundamentally altering the originality of the rifle, effectively sacrificing the history/provenance of it for a bit of performance...
YUCK!

Snert Its your car put in it what YOU want. Either way its cooler than my ride, I have a 1989 Caprice 4 door with a stock 305. It is the smoothest riding car there is and the A/C blows cold. When I took my friend for a road trip to shoot our ARs he told the others we shot with "I was sittin in my seat and he was driving and my arms were not long enough to reach him."

I heard someone say there are two kinds of people in the USA. Those that believe what other people want them to believe and those that use common sense and their intelligence to sort out the truth. I think that close to 50% of Americans are in the first group.
I couldn’t agree more! The question is did you believe Sidney Powell?

How the heck did Sid Powell land here?

its like Kevin Bacon. I bet he had a Sprint 6.

Ok, Fredo. How bout this?

I build a 400/468 with 500 HP AND have the Sprint rebuilt also. I put the 5 speed and 400 in, and the 400 hood. Hemmings just outlined a pump gas 500 HP 468. Can be done.

I put the Saginaw, BOP specific bellhousing and Sprint with original starter, Alt and carb with Ross Pistons, H cam, and split exhaust on a crane and have a SS exhaust built. When I get tired of 500 HP I will transplant it in, and bench race it against my walker with tennis ball mods....;)

I would even have the 3.8 (mind you this is a 4.2 non original Sprint from 68) tags on the original hood, backed by the original 4 speed saginaw. The only concession would be leafs, not mono, same rear end, same SAt-T-Track and I would upgrade brakes, just to stop to avoid hitting your Volvo from behind, asobviously you would be in front of me. The front springs can be 6 or 8 cylinder (I'd go 6) with a little rake to it.

I am not into LS anything. Doesn't appeal to my curmudgeon side. Just me.

Most jaunts around here are under 40 miles. More like 20. Putter out to the ice cream place, then down to Jerry's Curb Service, Bridgewater PA (look it up) then down Rt 51 thru the convenient 1/4 mile, then over the hills to home, back roads to avoid the po-po.

So who knows a good Q-jet RESTORER? Back to like new, appearance and performance?

The barrel is on order from Hart, and the smith in CO is aware it is coming. (14 week lag time) I have 5000 20 caliber bullets. I have some powders that might work and 1000 primers. I just need to decide 20VT or 20-222.

The 20VT will mean dies, while the 20-222 all i need is bushings.

But I have a 222. (and someday will have two) I am hoping High Plains comes thru with VT brass.

If anyone has a 20-222 reamer, I might be interested in renting/buying, if it suits my smith.

And back to cars....

Cliff no longer doing Q-jet
Actually there are 10 kinds of people in this world, those that understand binary, and those that don't
restorations but I hooked up with his former employee and plan to send the Q-jet. I won't lose money, even if I don't use it. Original 6 OHC Q-jets are rare and hard to find for sale.

Good to know. I read somewhere that he was thinking of not doing it anymore. The website was functional so I figured he was still at it. I should probably round up some parts before they're no longer available. Not a big future for Qjets.

If you do build a motor do some research on some of his recommendations. Especially cams, intakes and heads. Check out all the older Jim Hand info too. Based on the use info you posted their experience will be valuable.

There’s a carb guru or two in my AO, if needed.
Would proper built Sprint 6 really still be that power limited? With forged internals and maybe ported head & bigger cam, can it still be that anemic?
Reckon the limiting factor is the intake config. Too bad someone didn’t make a fuel injected DOHC for it, LOL. Prolly too rare a motor for an upgrade like that to be marketable/profitable?

I honestly thought the ‘Bird-Sprint 6/Q jet combo was quite the ‘barn find’ type of situation... where the value lies in the originality?
If that’s not the case, then heck yeah, ditch it and build as big & nasty as ya can!
The quest for HP drives all types of lunacy, case in point:
800+ all wheel drive, from a stock (built) 2.5L straight 5 cyl, turbo. Turns out, there is a replacement for displacement: BOOST!
Unfortunately, forced induction is not applicable for wildcats, so a fella hasta
neck big cases down to little bores, and hope it hooks, LOL

P.S. put a blower on that 468!

A Sprint 250 (68-69) was maxed out factory at 230 HP. Thats a factory set up.

Some guys stroke the 250, getting about 300 HP, if done perfectly.

One guy on an OHC forum was running tests on a turbo. Some guys will add EFI and others have tried the Sniper carb? on it. Old style was a 6=8 specialty intake and headers. Again, 275 HP was about it.

In factory form they surprised the old 283/289 small blocks. But in the end, I remain unimpressed.

I intend to keep the OHC drivetrain and rebuild it, on a stand, but plan to prioritize a V8 for driving.

It currently has a '72 350 Pontiac in it, with about 300 HP. It has a garbage carb on it. It was rebuilt in 86, then started and ran only 2 mins, out of time (cam off a toothe maybe?) and then my dad had a heart attack, left the engine passenger side without plugs for 25 years after that. I did not do the rebuild and knew nothing of what my dad had done. I found a box of stuff in the trunk he left for me. Years after he died I moved the car and found all the reciepts. I guess he was trying to surprise me. I have not even tried to turn the engine over. It might be all locked up. in 2005 I poured some mystery oil into the plug holes and popped plugs in. And it has been sitting ever since, while I raised kids.

And yes, the OHC is an albotross and a unicorn. Not many left. And yes, guys are dedicated to running them. There is a great OHC forum and group I belong to. They will throw me out if I go to a V8! But I just can't get over the dullness of the motor. i looked for 28 years to find an OHC and thought I would go that way.
Minds change...

It might be ok. Probably worth doing the mystery oil again in all 8 cylinders. Then try turning it with a breaker bar after a few days. Change the oil and prime the pump. Adjust the valves if needed and possible. Fire it. 350 Pontiacs make lots of torque. I distinctly remember the tire spin of my buddy's '74 4spd GTO that he would let me drive.

I imagine mass produced cam cores for this engine haven’t been made in 4-5 decades, which makes finding an aftermarket camshaft akin to a seeing a Leprechaun riding a Unicorn, chasing a Bigfoot.

457...

I got an aftermarket cam special made....$500 . matches profile of the H cam in 69
