Optimum Barrel length ?

Is there any proven / written info on what is the optimum Bbl. length as it pertains to accuracy ? I'm guessing that the 26" Bbl's that Rem. puts on their "varmint" rifles is more for selling rifles that anything else.

There are so many factors in determining the optimum barrel length that it can be difficult to describe them all.

What is important is what performance requirements do you have, for which cartridge, with which bullet, and what constraints are you going to impose?

By constraints I mean limiting to one powder type, one brass, magazine length, etc.

Optimum barrel length would be dependent on caliber, twist, load, etc. If there was a standard optimum barrel length all rifles would be made using it so I don't think you can get there from here.

Optimal barrel length to what circumstances?
There are many variables to look at:
If you need/desire a lighter rifle, shorter and/or thinner barrels.
If you want more velocity, longer barrels.
If you desire greater cooling, thicker barrels.
If you want all the powder burned before the bullet has left the barrel (less muzzle flash), will depend on what cartridge and what powder being used, to what length barrel would be optimal.
And the list goes on and on.....
Rule of thumb: smaller cartridges and faster burning powders need less barrel. The opposite for larger cartridges and slow burning powders. Same for heat.

Thank you all, I knew I left something out,
1.308 shooting 155 & 168 gn BTHP's
2. 223 shooting 69's 77's & 80's
Most powders listed for both are on hand , Max range 300 yds

Thank you

It is not Remington - many companies make 26" barrels, and many long range match rifles go to 30" or more.

At one time, benchrest rifles used 26" barrels, until the weight classes changed and forced barrels to get shorter.

My assumption is that you want accuracy, or does velocity play in for you? If just accuracy, a shorter barrel length will suffice and give you more forgiveness.

If handloading, 20" on the 308 would be the compromise length between the two bullet weights. 168's at 2620-2650 and 155's at 2750-2770 with my Varget lot. That is assuming a match chamber, Winchester brass, 2.800 COAL, Jumping .020, Sierra bullets, and my primers.

.223, I've shot 18' and 24' both shoot very well with a variety of powders and bullets.
