Optimum Barrel Length?

What is the optimum barrel length for the Dasher and BRX running 107's, 105's?

What point is their no velocity gains for these rounds?

Thanks
Ken

i believe 30 inches is about all that is usefull for this round. you will still make gains per inch of barrel, but it will be small--maybe as low as single digits--but take it for what its worth, i read it off this sight and PS magazine

Cole is right; 30" seems to be the consensus. My Savage 12F 6BR has a 30" barrel and it works well with the slowest powders suitable for the cartridge. The Dasher and BRX are likely to behave similarly.

I believe short barrels balance better; most of mine are 22" and 23". Velocity gain with longer barrels is not worth the effort if the gun does not ride bags well.

Talking with Dan Dowling, the guy credited with naming the Dasher, he seems to think that 26" is all that you really need for the 6mm Dasher and 105s w/RL-15 out to 1000 yards. Richard Schatz has done well with a 26" barrel in benchrest with this combo. I am having my 6Dasher barrel set back to 24" and will compare velocities to when it was 28", and relay the info back to Dowling as an experiment.

Please relay that info here as well!

This will be for 600-1,000 yds. The barrel will have a medium palma contour so I can set it back if the need arises.

Will be for Fclass and I can add weight to the buttstock to offset barrel weight as long as I can stay under weight the weight limit. I plan to weigh the gun under each bag/rest postition to try to keep it balanced.

Ordering the reamer next week and then the barrel as soon as the reamer arrives.

Currently thinking 28"s ...

If anyone has set one back or shortened it, maybe we can get some chrono data?

Ken

I think thats a good choice, 28" med or heavy palma taper would be fine for F-Class. 28" does allow a setback, as long as you set it back in time. I didn't and I had 4" of throat erosion after 3,000 rounds (lost count). That's why I am going from 28" down to 24", I am able to do that because I have a 1.250 straight cyliner. I still easily make weight at 20lbs. with a composite stock, you'll have no problem with a palma taper. Rifle shoots good even though it is not balanced.

Here is barrel cut down tests showing velocity changes on a 6br. http://accurateshooter.wordpress.com/2009/02/05/barrel-length-and-velocity-barrel-cut-down-tests/
