Opinions on Remington 7 1/2 BR primers

I local dealer has some Rem 7 1/2 BR primers in stock and I have never used them. Thought I would get some input from anyone on here who has used them before I buy any.

What cartridge are you planning to use them in?

I've been happy with them in 223, but my CCI BR4 seem to make better loads (maybe just my rifle).

Thanks for the input on the primers. I would like to use them in a whole host of cartridges if possible, 222,223,6BR,and maybe even my 30BR. If they would be more suitable in the 222 class of cartridges I would be happy just to use them for that application.

I have used them for years in a variety of cartridges with excellent results. Everything from .20 VT to 6 PPC to 30 BR. You will not be disappointed.

They are my go to primer when I want extra accuracy. They are not always the best, but they are always close to the best.

The only primers I have used for my 17 AH, 17MIV, 222, 223, and 222 mag.

They were the only primers our high power team used for years in the .223's, we switched to BR-4 when the Remmys were hard to get.

The 7-1/2 primers were developed specifically for the Mike Walker designed Remington .222 case. They work very well in the whole family of .222 derived cases. You won't find many of them on equipment lists for short range BR to light up 6 PPC and 30BR cases......yes many have tried them there, but they just refuse to shoot as small as the milder Fed. 205.

Back in the late 1960s to early 1970s I tried both the Federal 205s and the Remington 7 1/2. I started with the Federals because I had really good results with the 210 Federal but the Federal 205 cratered very easily in my .222. The Remington 7.5 did not crater.


(no 205 Match back then. The 205M then was a small rifle magnum primer)

Back when primers were very scarce Remington came through and the 7 1/2's were always available! Another tool in the arsenal to find that accurate load...

Excellent choice for the 222 - 223 class cartridges. I also like Federal 205M, primers for this class cartridges.

I sure do appreciate all the replies from you guys. The way things are today I did not want to pass up an opportunity to pick up some useful reloading components. I think all your combined comments have convinced me to grab some of these primers tomorrow.

I order primers by the sleeve. (5000). When I am down to one or two boxes of 1000, I order a new sleeve. In my WSR and Rem 7 1/2s, I ALWAYS have an extra sleeve in the cabinet....don't want to be without them. My CCIs and Federals have their spot in the cabinet, but I do not need extra sleeves of them. Wouldn't be without my Rem 7 1/2s and WSR primers.

The old copper colored ones were better than the current ones. The numbers on the chronograph were always more consistent with the older ones.

I used to use them because they had a pretty hard cup (say compared to CCI400…). I did ditch them for Wolf SRM because the Russian primers are generally slightly larger (good for stretched out primer pockets) and more importantly because it has been shown by German Salazar in his Rifleman’s Journal (no longer available on the web) that the Rem 7 ½ have a pretty strong flame which has been found to not give as consistent MV than the weak flame primers i.e. the Russian ones. FWIW, my SDEV did drop to single digits after I switched but I cannot honestly attribute it solely to the primers as I worked on a number of other reloading things in the mean time.

They are fine for general plinking...
