Opinions on new rifle barrels.

jackson1,
During my 18 years of F-Class shooting I have used Krieger, Brux and Bartlein. They all make great barrels, but for the last 10 years or more I have use nothing but Bartlein Barrels. They have never failed to produce very small groups and large scores. In fact all the shooting members of Team Berger rely on Bartlein. They are great people to deal with and have the latest equipment which enables them to repeatedly maintain close tolerances. You can’t go wrong with Tracy, Frank and the boys!

Bergara Barrels are rifled with buttons.

Yes, thank you, you are correct. Sand Hammer Forging, Inc. is the other one and you can also buy FN made blanks from several sources. FN CHF barrel blanks are made in the USA. So, there is not two there are at least three.

If it were me, I would rethink the twist rate on the 22-250 and the swift. 8 seems to fast on the swift to me. I would probably recommend 12t on both. but it depends on bullet choice. just my 2 cents

My first after market barrel was a Pac-Nor 3 grove 8twst 243ai. And i was so happy with how accurate it was!! I will be buying more of them.

jackson1,
If you will note, folks have listed several different barrel manufacturers who've made them very happy. So you can be sure, that there is a fair list of barrel makers you can choose from and expect to get a really good barrel. It is really pretty much in which barrel makers an individual feels comfortable with and relies upon for great results downrange. I've tried some of those listed above and have found the one I like the best and that works for me.

Thank all for the replies. It was not my intent to knock any of these makers. Just looking for opinions on what is working well for others. In the end, I want to try several makers and hope they all shoot well. Looking forward to all load development I will be doing in the future.

My latest Bartlein 5r 6MM 1-8 is the lest fouling barrel of that type I have shot so far. Better than Krieger, Criterion, Rock Creek, and Pac Nor.

But all those other were outstanding also. The Rock Creek especially.

Larry, are most of you still running 9tw for your 7mm’s and are you using a 5R or regular 4 groove barrel?

For the traditionalists: PO Ackley sold a bunch of his barrel making equipment to CP Donnelly, who made barrels for several gunsmiths as well as his own shop. I found barrels made on the equipment by both PO & CP to be quite accurate. When CP retired he sold the equipment to "someone from Arizona" but I didn't get a name prior to CP's passing. If the purchaser of the equipment has the same skill as PO & CP, he will be a source of a very accurate button rifled barrel- all you have to do is figure out who he is.

Lawrence97, Yes I still use (and I think most if not all my team mates) 9 twists. I have never had a problem using that twist even at sea level. I use 5R barrels.

I consider my self rifle rich and barrel poor. Since buying a bore scope a couple of years ago and monitoring my barrels, it is time for a change. Stopped shooting these rifles because the accuracy has dropped off. Fortunately I have the money and the time to get the job done. In the area, there are 3 barrel makers to choose from; Brux, Bartline, and Krieger. These are my thoughts and would like yours?

17 Remington, 1in 9 Douglas, 700 Remington, 26 inches (coyotes)

22-250 Browning B78, 1 in 14, Krieger,26 inches, heavy contour (plinking)

220swift, Ruger 77, 1 in 8, Kreiger, 26 inches, heavy contour (plinker)

243 Winchester. Model 70, 1 in 10, Barline 26 inches medium contour, (hunting rifle)

25-06, 721 Remington 26 inches, Have not thought about twist rate or manufacturer, but like to shoot 100 grain plus bullets.

7-06AI, FN action, 26 inches medium contour, Brux, undetermined twist rate. Shoot mainly 150 grain bullets- my go to hunting rifle.

7-06 AI, FN action, heavy barrel, length and twist undetermined. Brux. Would like to use for long range club shooting off the bench.

Please feel free to pass along your thoughts.[/QUOTE I have had two of the brands you mention and my Krieger outlived the other by a long shot. I wont likely buy anything but a Krieger from now on.

You live in Wisconsin also.....if you get in your vehicle and start driving in any direction you will no doubt run into a quality barrel maker. Safe travels BN
