Opinions on new rifle barrels.

I consider my self rifle rich and barrel poor. Since buying a bore scope a couple of years ago and monitoring my barrels, it is time for a change. Stopped shooting these rifles because the accuracy has dropped off. Fortunately I have the money and the time to get the job done. In the area, there are 3 barrel makers to choose from; Brux, Bartline, and Krieger. These are my thoughts and would like yours?

17 Remington, 1in 9 Douglas, 700 Remington, 26 inches (coyotes)

22-250 Browning B78, 1 in 14, Krieger,26 inches, heavy contour (plinking)

220swift, Ruger 77, 1 in 8, Kreiger, 26 inches, heavy contour (plinker)

243 Winchester. Model 70, 1 in 10, Barline 26 inches medium contour, (hunting rifle)

25-06, 721 Remington 26 inches, Have not thought about twist rate or manufacturer, but like to shoot 100 grain plus bullets.

7-06AI, FN action, 26 inches medium contour, Brux, undetermined twist rate. Shoot mainly 150 grain bullets- my go to hunting rifle.

7-06 AI, FN action, heavy barrel, length and twist undetermined. Brux. Would like to use for long range club shooting off the bench.

Please feel free to pass along your thoughts.

I have 3 Rock Creek barrels and am completely satisfied with them. But I'm sure others make great barrels also. Barlow

I have used Hart, Rock Creek, Krieger and now Bartlein. They all shot very well. I now just go with the company that actually delivers the best customer service and delivery date. So that is Bartlein. I prefer the 5r with a fast twist. Mike

Are you ready for some more good barrel makers in Wi. It's even more to think about. Rock Creek, Mullerworks, Criterion and Obermeyer are also from southern Wi.

Not sure I understand, these are rifles and barrel combos you have now and want to change or these are the rifles listed with the barrels you are considering????? I have used them all at some point with many you haven't listed....I have to say that there really are no bad barrel makers out there. If I am building a light weight or "mountain" contour I get a single point cut barrel because there is less stress. I like button rifled barrels and have had very good luck with them. This will make some fanboys cry, but I steer clear of hammer forged, there is probably no possible way to put more stress in a barrel than to hammer it into final finish and shape. Fortunately there is only one or two aftermarket makers I know of that use this method.
Suggest you consider Pac-Nor, I have got some of my best most accurate barrels from them.

If your going to order a bunch at one time you may inquire if you qualify for any kind of discount. - Believe it or not some of them will grant it. (I ordered 8 barrel blanks in 1 order from one reputable maker & they gave me a 30% discount on those 8 blanks & every blank there after in that years time). - Most of the major providers provide pretty good customer service, I've found Krieger & Benchmark both to be at the top of the list in my dealings.

And Tim North at Broughton as well. !!

Of the barrel makers you mentioned, I only have first hand experience with Krieger and Brux. All have been good barrels. I couldn’t say if one is better than the other. Just order some barrels from all 3 and you wouldn’t go wrong. Or just pick one of them and still wouldn’t go wrong. I would be more worried about who was putting them on instead of who made them. I also have had good results with Benchmark and Shilen.

what he said---who puts em on is what will matter most

I’m not aware of any after market custom barrel makers that use hammer forging. Please share who these makers are. Thanks.

I’ve used multiple Broughton, Krieger 5R & 4 groove, Bartlein 5R, Brux, Schneider, and most recently, Mullerworks. They have all been good barrels. I would use all of them again and am sure I will. I have in my closet to try next barrel blanks by - Hart, Shilen Select Match, Lilja 3 groove, Lederer, and Obermeyer. I’m certain I will be pleased with those as well.

I choose my rifle builder carefully though.

Well, I could be wrong...imagine that. If I am not mistaken, Bergara is one and Sako {believe it or not, they do or at least they did sell just barrels} is another.

My 721 in 25.06 from PacNor is a laser shooting 75 gr. Vmax bullets and very accurate.

I have:
PACNOR (FN J.C. Higgins M50 - 6.5-06, 1-10)
McGowen (almost all Ruger M77's, .20P, .204R, .22-250, .243, 6.5-06, .308 (dodecagon), 6.5X47L) & Kimber fly weight .308
Lilja (FN, JCH - .280, R M77, .30-06, Rem 700 .243)
Hart (FN BR - .300W, 6.5-.308)
Krieger ? (.375-.338)
Douglas (R77/22, .22LR)

Lots of re-barrel jobs would mean lots of $$ so I treat them real good. They all are accurate enough for my purposes & button rifled. Right now McGowen is the choice, they treat me real good and we like the drive up to Kalispell on the east side of the lake to drop off gun work & have lunch.

I might add that the FN 6.5-06 PacNor should have been a 1-9 twist and I used it for years with 100's & 120's and it shot real good but then when I used it with 140 hpbt bullets real bad. I measured the twist and determined it was actually a 1-10 (plus or minus .25). I now use it with 100's.

I've used Brux, Bartlein and Krieger and have been happy with all three. Got a couple of Mullerworks coming to Australia next year so looking forward to having them spun up. as others have said, you won't really go wrong with the barrel from those companies, just make sure your Smith takes the time to spin them up properly and the rest should take care of itself.
