Opinions on new chrono

I'm looking to buy my first chrono. Been reloading for years and finally need to get one. Has anybody used the Competition Electronics ProChrono?

It's in my budget at about $120 from Midway. Great reviews but wondering if I should bank some more cash and get something better. I don't need the most expensive or newest version but didnt know if there was something better for a few more bucks.

krumfola,

My first chronograph is the one you are considering. It worked great from the get-go and continues to do so two years later. A few months ago, I set up the Pro Chrono in front of my Oehler 35 P (bought that last year) and the readings from the Pro Chrono were very close to, and very consistent on the average with the 35P.

Depending on your needs, there are advantages to spending more money on a chrono like the 35P. For example, my Pro Chrono reads out shot velocity in what seem like increments of 6 fps. It was explained to me by a shooter with a TON of knowledge and experience that this is all about the difference in clock speed of the unit. You get what you pay for and it is true, my 35P reads out to 1 fps and therefore, you get better data.

I always pack both units for a range session and that came in handy a couple times when the Oehler 35P crapped out on me and I pulled out the cheapo, which saved my bacon on those days. Have since worked out the issue with Oehler's excellent customer service people.

My bottom line.......I wouldn't part with my Pro Chrono. Others will likely have their opinions on it and others.

My son and i have been using one for years now and love it haven't had any real issues with it, easy to set up most time we just leave it assembled small enough to set in floor on car or truck and put on tripod at the range, only thing that has happened to it was blew the plastic cover that's over buttons off from muzzle blast just popped it back in and moved it farther away from muzzle

I've had a CED and a PVM-21 which is considered to be about the best you can get at less than $1K. Sold all those and haven't looked back since getting a Magnetospeed chrono. It is extremely reliable, just as accurate as the PVM and way easier to set up, use, and store. Oh and it's about 1/3 the price of the PVM. The only people who have had issues are the straight-taper 1.25 inch barrel crowd. But, I think Magneto has addressed this issue.

the magneto speed has been working great for me and friends and unbelievably easy to use ...put it on your barrel and shoot...thats it Kevin
