Neck turning opinions

Fella's I'm thinking about neck turning! I have been loading for close to 30 years but I guess I have just had good luck I don't know but now I am wanting to try to better my groups, I was into the long range shooting several years ago but a divorce kinda put a cap on my budget and while I'm still on a budget I'm getting to where I have more time that I can get out and shoot and want to get better so I'm trying to help in any way I can.

My question is, is there a neck turning kit that will not break the bank that is good? I've been looking at the Sinclair models but really don't know which one to go with and I have found that the most expesive is not always the best so I ask you fella's what is you recommendation for a good quality easy to use neck turning tool? opinions are welcomed! Later,

Kirk

ksmirk--I only have neck turning experience with the K&M neck turner. It has been a great tool for me. I neck turn .17 Remington, .17 Tactical and .204 Ruger. Some of the other neck turning tool manufacturers DO NOT offer neck turners for these small calibers.

Here's the contact information for finding K&M neck turning tools:

K&M Precision Products
Roger Miller
8763 Dexter Chelsea Road

Here's a link to their Web site:

Their listed prices are quite low, but their shipping and handling charge on a K&M neck turning body with one mandrel was $12.50!!! :o :o :o I thought that was a bit high and ordered it from another source.

Are you shooting custom barrels? The major benefit derived from neck-turning is in fitting the case to the chamber; it centers the bullet in the bore. I'll suggest that you use a ball-mic to sort your brass by neck-wall variance, tossing the really bad ones and keeping the best for competition. I don't subscribe to the notion that neck tension in a single case varies with variation in the wall thickness.

I don't have tight necks just SAMII min spec. I'm just looking to help out. I doubt I shoot any comp. I get to wound up in it and next thing I know I'm broke!

I'm a Quality Control inspector so measuring tools I have and I'm naturally picky, I just got to working with some 308 brass and the necks vary much more than I would have thought, I have very few that are real close I just want everything to be right so I have no one to blame but myself. Later,

As 69 said, if you aren't shooting tight neck chambers, you don't need to turn necks. It's only when you get into the tight necks that you even need to turn. There isn't even any sense in trying to skim turn the necks in a SAAMI chamber.

You'd probably be better off just buying some Lapua brass for that 308.

Hopefully the brass you have that is not up to snuff isn't Lapua :D

The Lapua brass is a bit pricey for as many as I would probably loose. I have 2 500ct. boxes of Winchester brass and the reasoning for turning the necks would be just to even everything out. Getting grass and other goodies in the action and I'm sure some dust gets into the chamber I opt to not chamber with tight neck chambers, what I like to shoot is the tactical style of shooting, crawl around and pop steel plates out to 1K. Thanks for the opinions fella's! 1/2" groups are the norm for my 308 so I guess that's close enough in reality! just wish I could get it better like my 243. Later,

Kirk

My Lyman Outside neck turning tool that is an attachment to my trimmer works well when used with Redding Type S FLRS bushing dies/no expander. When loading for factory chambers only size 1/2 of the neck, this centers the round in the chamber after 2 or 3 firings.
