Opinion on Barns 140's match versus berger 140's vdl target

Shooting 600 to 1000 yards cant find Berger 140 target but Barns are available in 140 target lead core allot cheaper to ,any feed back from someone who has shot both .Thanks

I know 2 people who tried the barns. No good luck with accuracy. I use berger 140vld hunting but stocked up 3 years ago on them. I would choose the 140eldm over the barns. They are arround also just spotty

I did a comparison between the Barnes and the Berger VLD at 1K, the Barnes impacted about 2 minutes lower, might be an ok bullet at 600 but not really an LR bullet

Just great :(

I bought something like 3 boxes earlier this year when they were on sale and pretty much the only thing I could find and because I had excellent results with other Barnes products, in other calibers (hunting). They are for my 6.5x47L, which I haven't had time to do load workup on yet. I'm not a rich man. Any other bad news you have for me?

They may shoot well in your barrel. Its not like its the 140rdf thats known to have random fliers, just maybe not as consistent right out of the box as others. I would sort them by BTO if shooting matches.

Last year I bought 1000 Barnes 140 gr 6.5 bullets because the 140gr Berger hybrids were unavailable. This was a 5 shot group off a bench at 100 yards (6.5x47 using H4350). However, I have not used them in any competition, and I don't know how they would perform at 600 or 1000 yards.

Shooting the Barnes 140 gr. Match Burners against the 140 gr. Berger LR Target @ 300 yds. the Bergers were more accurate than the Barnes in the 260AI. At 100 yds. there did not seem to be as much difference but the Bergers was still more accurate.

This forum hates Barnes match bullets for some reason.

I’ve had pretty good luck with the 112 from a 6x47 Lapua. They actually had the same POI as the 110 Sierra to 840 yards (longest bank on my range)

They shoot very well, not quite as good as the Sierra from my rifle but they’re darn good.

Your question contains all the info you need. "Can't find Berger 140's but Barnes are available and a lot cheaper too". There is a reason for that.
A decent bullet that I have shot that might be available, and by no means its not the Berger Hybrid 140, but it shot decent is the Hornandy 140gr HPBT Match. I have shot them at 1000yrds quite a few times, even won my class in a club match shooting a buddy's gun fire forming a bunch of brass for him, LOL. The BC is .583 if I remember correctly. But the one I would look at since you are also shooting the 6.5x47 is the 130gr Norma Golden Target which is coincidentally the same exact BC of .583 as the 140gr Hornandy I listed above but you will gain velocity being 10 grains lighter. The 140 Hornandy's are the same price as the match Burners and a way better bullet.

I have shot the Match Burners a lot. I can get good groups but I will normally have 1 flyer in 5. The ogive floats quite a bit on the Barnes. I separated about 100 of them last weekend out of a box of 500. I was getting 0.724 to 0.731. Pretty big swing. I separated them into 3 groups and just tried to keep them together in my box. I haven’t shot the Hornady BTHP yet but I checked about 15 of them this morning and they were all within about 0.0015. I am going to shoot the Hornadys this weekend to see if they group without the flyers.

We had a couple of cooler mornings last week and I was at the range with my Model 12 6.5x47L as soon as we could shoot. On the second day, I was much more careful with my brass prep and got h4350 to shoot at or under 1 MOA at 100 yds on every rung of a ladder test. 39 grains at -.010 jump turned in the best 3-shot groups at .33 and to add delight, shot with a velocity SD of 0.85. I had a few primed cases left over, so for laughs I loaded up 33gr of AR-Comp at different seating depths since QL predicted a good OBT node. I swear, AR-Comp never ceases to amaze me. Despite giving up about 100 fps to H4350, the 3-shot goup seated +.005 into the lands all shot into an incredible one hole. All the steps were sub-MOA but after that 1-holer, I was speechless. Showed it to a couple club members there and one commented that "Reloading is like slot machines. It only takes one good group to keep you coming back for more". Ain't that the truth!
Its predicted to be a scorcher of a week to come but the first cool morning (possibly Monday) will find me back there pulling that handle. ;)

It wasn't just a fluke. I returned today with the same AR-Comp recipe and put up .100 and .218 3-shot groups! Filed it away as a good 100 yd load.
I took along 4 other powder experiments, using the same +.005 jam.
35.5gr Varget 5-shots strung horizontally just over an inch. Didn't feel it was me.
38.2gr RL16 5-shot group came in at .266.
Both faster than the 33 AR-Comp load.
On a lark, I also tried 43.2gr RL26 which was as full as I could get the Peterson case using both a drop tube and vibrating. That charge along with the jam clocked 130 fps faster than QL predicted. No excess pressure signs however, but the 5-shot group was so-so, despite 3 of the shots going into a .186 group. Other 2 shots opened the group up to .733. I may revisit that with a lighter charge.
The real surprise was 42.0gr H4831SC. It put up a .302 5-shot group! Also worth revisiting.

Fun playing with different powders.

Yes it is but very frustrating when nothing works !!!!!!!!!!!! LOL
Believe me. As a reloading tinkerer, I can totally relate to things not working. I have found that my case prep has more impact upon my efforts than just about anything else, save using a high power scope, a good rest and rear bag. My opinion, which comes from shooting ARA rimfire BR, is that if you can't resolve 1/8 inch aiming through the scope, don't be surprised if your groups aren't small. IMHO a 3-9x scope, while perfectly adequate for deer or squirrel hunting, doesn't cut it for load testing at 100 yds. At least not with my 67 year old eyes.

If anyone is wondering why I chose the powder charges that I did. They were all predicted by QL to hit an OBT node. It seems to be a good starting point from experience. Of course, QL doesn't always predict (see signature) velocities right on the first time out, but it can be educated by the second time and beyond.
