Opening up a 223 bolt face?

What all is involved in opening up the bolt of a remington 700 223 bolt face to use 6ppc? Obviously the face must be opened up, but does anything need to be done to the extractor or ejector?

The ejector is OK, but the extractor will need to be replaced.....

Replaced with a different sized one, or replaced simply because you have removed material from the bolt face and need to reinstall an extractor?

The material where it used to live will be removed when the bolt face is opened up. You'll end up with a Sako or AR type extractor in it's place.

The other posters are correct. I do this work, but anymore, it makes sense to just order a PTG 2 piece bolt. You can get it with wither a Sako or M16 type extractor, can be ordered in custom od's to tighten up the fit in YOUR raceway, they have several nice fluting options for them, and the handle will need to be timed...which very likely needs to be done anyway on a Remington. Not to mention, they will be true and the firing pin hole will be a better fit, reducing or eliminating primer cratering and/or piercing.


When all is said and done, it'll cost just a few bucks more than simply opening your bolt face and adding the extractor. Of course that's somewhat dependent on the options you add. IMHO though, it's a much better value to go this route.
