Opening lug area on HS Precision Stock

I was wondering if anyone has opened up the lug cutout on a HS Precision stock? My barreled action has a Tubb lug that is .366" thick and the opening in the HS stock is around .250". I will have to mill forward around .120" to fit the Tubb lug. I know the stock has a bedding block and I believe this stock has the aluminum running up into the forend. I'm wondering if removing .120" would damage the aluminum support running forward of the action. Has anyone tried opening up the lug area on a HS Precision stock with good results.

I tried to find a cutaway picture of a HS Stock so I could see how the aluminum support is forward of the action and lug but not having any luck. I hate to ruin a perfectly good stock. I could always put the barrel in the lathe and set it up for a lug .250" thick but that is a lot of trouble. Especially since the gun is a tack driver.

no problem. seems like I do it on every one. I usually just mill straight across where those 2 rounded spots are on the outsides

I usually use Badger Ordnance 5/16 (0.3125) thick lugs and they extend lower too. You have to cut the lug pocket not only wider, but deeper too. I don't know how far the Tubb lug extends below the action, but the Badger lug will require cutting past the aluminum and into the composite below. There's plenty of aluminum up front and on the sides though.

Thanks guys. Yes the Tubb lug was too deep as well. That was a quick fix in the mill. I was too chicken to plunge deeper thru the aluminum. Dad always told me to modify the cheapest part in case you screw it up:D

I'll set it up in the mill and mill forward what is needed. I figured you guys had done it already. My luck is I mill forward and separate the bedding block from the front aluminum extension running into the forend. That is what kept me up at night.

Thanks,
Kris

Sunny Hill brackets (lugs) are .240" thick, ground true and flat both sides, and made to the original Remington profile. Will fit in 99.9% of the stocks and chassis out there that take standard Rem pattern brackets. No need to chop/compromise the full length blocks embedded in the stock. I believe they also offer a .010" oversize lug for "blueprinted" actions. Available both SS and ChromMo. When I do barrel jobs I provide the lug and include it in the cost. No need to fuss with the stock cutout.

I agree but years ago I got on this Tubb lug kick when all my stocks were wood or wood laminate so milling the pocket wasn’t an issue. Now days in the world of bedding blocks and composites it is biting me. Everything I have restocked up to now has been McMillan’s which present no issue. I’ll just stick to McMillans on future stock purchases and eliminate this issue.

Great suggestion on the lug. I’ll take a look for future builds.

You can get a .250" ground lug from Greg Tannel with a slight taper that drops in perfectly on the HS stocks without having to mill into the sides and or bottom of the aluminum chassis.

Dusty I think that is the wrong side on a HS stock in your drawing to cut.

It was late. I do mill that so it doesnt influence action placement front to back and mill the front too. With the way their skeleton is you cant compromise the aluminum. Way too much there so go for it
