Opening bolt face?

So, who to open a bolt face from 308 to magnum on a Rem. Mod. 7 bolt and what is the going rate for such a job?

Thanks

For a 700 (which is similar on the bolt-face end of the bolt), it is fairly involved. Just opening up the diameter with a lathe is not enough. The undercut for the Rem. extractor extends deeper than the magnum cutout so you must cut it larger, then solder in a ring in order to completely fill in the extractor undercut. Then it must be cut for a different extractor: either a sako style, or a m16 style; either of which will require opening up the bolt recess in the barrel tenon.

For a Remington 700, it's easier and cheaper to just buy a PTG bolt. For a Model Seven, I couldn't tell you. Your best bet might be to look for a used magnum bold--assuming they made the Model Seven in magnum.

I do it for $140 including new extractor and shipping. Your choice of Sako, mini M-16, or full size M-16. I've done several bolt face changes for members and all have been very satisfied. There are photos here but don't have time to find them now.

I agree with replacing it with a PTG bolt. I don't have any PTG bolts in stock with a magnum bolt face. Lead time to order one is 10 weeks or so. The PTG bolt also likely will need to be fit by a smith (some drop in, some don't, they are made to be a very tight fit on the extraction cam giving you excellent extraction timing, but some need to be fit). --Jerry

Do they make a model seven bolt?
