Open up a neck on full length die

I know this can be done but I don't know where to start. I need someone who can open up a neck on an RCBS 7mm br full length die. My die size's the neck down about .006 more than I need. I have a Redding full length bushing die but am sending it back to Redding because it will not bump the shoulder enough to chamber the case. I need the neck opened to .304. The RCBS die will bump the shoulder enough to chamber. Any suggestions on who would do this. Thanks Allen

I would simply take a few thou from the bottom of the bushing die so it can bump the shoulders back. You could take it from the shell holder as well but I prefer to take it from the die rather than needing a dedicated modified she'll holder to work with.

Try a local machine shop...

Might be easier to modify a shell holder and keep the Redding bushing die. Just a thought.

I do turn my necks. It is a tight neck (.308) instead of the standard.310.

If your non bushing die sizes them too much you can get a different expander, use a seperate expander, or turn your necks more

The Hornady custom shop and Forster will both make dies to your specification, although they only do so on their new dies AFAIK. Both have reasonable prices - ~50% more than retail for standard die. I prefer Hornady sizing dies because their elliptical expander does a very good job. For seaters I like Forster micrometer dies because the geometry of the seater stem is correct for VLDs and the metallurgy is right so it doesn't bell and gall the way RCBS seaters do.

If the neck is thinner it will not size down as much. And if the expander was bigger it will bring it to the right tension although thats a lot of back and forth. I was just offering a suggestion for instant results- carry on

Wouldn't a thinner neck still require the same amount of movement as a non-turned neck? Instead of moving a bunch in the sizer, it is moving a bunch in the chamber which would still require as much in the sizer.

Turn the necks too much and now you will have the same issue as a die with a tight neck area.

On the net too much clearance is a bad thing. In an ideal world we would all run minimum clearances but thats just not the case. I have customers that run over .008 just because theyre too cheap to buy another bushing and the dasher brass lasts the life of the barrel. I have some lapua 243 brass i bought used already turned and have been using it for 10 yrs with .011 clearance- admittedly thats only maybe 30 reloads as many as i have and i cant get that barrel to die. I see lots of stuff most think would never work.

I edited my post shortly after...sorry. Pretty much the same question though.

I will agree that having excess clearance and moving the brass quite a bit isn't the worst thing in the world. I was more interested in the "what if" part.

Look for an Acro barrel lap tool and several grades of lapping compound. I've opened up the necks on several of my 260AI dies to the exact diameter I need, like a bushing die. An added benefit is concentricity on honed dies has been consistently better than my bushing dies...YMMV
