ONx discontinues Praire Dog layer

I recently discovered the Praire Dog layer missing on my onx so I contacted them, they said that due it not being updated for some time, they have discontinued it. I told them that even if was older data it still provided a reference for a location that had or has had praire dogs and that seldom does a town completely die, even if the plague or poisoned, there may be only a few left but they will generally bounce back. I asked them to bring back the layer and the last word I got was, it wasnt going to happen.

So, I would encourage those of you who had the layer or even if you dont but might in the future, contact them and complain, it was a great tool.

I used mine last month with no problem, when did they discontinue it? and yes I love it.

I did not find it reliable, used it last year and most of the towns were poisoned or plagued out. It takes lots of time and work to find shootable numbers.

If you don't mind me asking, what general area were you seeing this?
We just returned from the Dakotas and the numbers were also down.

I spoke to on-x and was told the prairie dog "layer" had not been updated since 2018, and that was why it had been disconnected. I think if it was still available and was treated like any other layer as in there might be deer here, there might not be deer here. it isn't promising anything and it shows were dog towns are or were. the rest is up to the shooter. you don't expect it to be easy do you?

If dogs bounce back from poison and plague in your area, I am happy for ya.
Several towns I frequented before the plague, nothing there but grass and cows. Oh I am sure there will be some show up at some time and use the old burrows, just has not happened in the past five years yet.
Some ranches the plague hit get a dose of poison when ever they see any now.

it may not be perfect, but right now if you are scouting for new potential areas, you are going to spend alot of time behind a windshield and money looking in areas that may not have EVER had any dogs, at least with the layer you had an idea if there ever were any dogs in that area. The layer was based on what appeared to be dog hills, from a satellite image, there is no way to tell if they were active or inactive hills but at least you knew at some point, pdogs existed. I guess one of the factors for taking it offline was people complaining it was not accurrate, well hell, what do you expect? in my travels, in 2 different states, I only found 1 town that they showed, it was a dog town and had been pretty good sized, but I only found 3 dogs on it, but it was still a dog town.

In my opinion it was a good resource, now we have nothing but windshield, time, gas and money

What state was it for? I am pretty sure all on x data is public data. If you can find the file it can be opened in Google Earth. I work in the same industry as onx. I can look for the layer. Habitat data like that is usually like BLM or your state fish and game. Try googling prairie dog habitat shapefile or prairie dog habitat gis data. Maybe prairie dog colonies.
