Only in Montana

I was on school rifle team, the school supplied guns and the ammo. After getting out of school I had a job in upstate NY and would fly home once a month. I would get on the plane with my trap gun and the stewardess would put it in a closet and give it back when we landed. The times are changing and not for the better.

You are absolutely correct. Gallatin Gateway, just called "Gateway" by the locals, was a stage stop on the way from Bozeman to the west entrance to Yellowstone. There is an old photo of a log arch above the trail with the words "Gallatin Gateway to Yellowstone National Park." Which was nothing more than a stage track up the Gallatin River canyon. Over the years it became a funky little Montana town, and the name morphed into Gallatin Gateway. I'm about 3 miles north of Gateway.
I wanted to stop and do some fly fishing in that beautiful river. Didn’t have my rod..

The rivers are what attract $$$$$. The real gold is in the lakes around here. About 45 years ago, I guided fly fishermen on the Henry's Fork, Gallatin, Madison, Yellowstone and a bunch of other different water in, and around Yellowstone. I still have guys that I grew up with, that made guiding a career. I ask them why they go to the rivers, fight the crowds, and catch 5 or 6 small fish when they could be fishing some of the lakes and catching 30 or 40 in a morning. Most of the fish in the lakes will average 18 to 19 inches, with some in the 23 or 24 inch range. I catch several each summer that are between 5 and 8 pounds. They always answer the same way, "They come to fish the rivers that they have read about." My response is always the same too. "Good, you guys fish the rivers, and I'll fish the lakes by myself. A close friend, and former guide as well. and I landed 72 rainbows and browns on Hebgen one day last year. Not another boat in sight.

This is 100% correct, all you have to do is look at some of the transgender stuff thats getting voted on in Montana, Missoula is a good example.
Get involved dont set on your hands and think just because its Montana it won't happen here.
Bozeman is like our Jackson. And we have a few others aspiring to be Jackson. As a whole, any state is trending in the wrong direction, just a matter of how far it’s already gone and how fast it’s going. I hope JD Vance follows trump for 8 years, that might slow it down before the pendulum swings again.

Is Cody changing like that too?

Since we are reminiscing about days gone by and times spent growing up in small rural towns, I thought I'd add to the conversation. I grew up outside a small OR town that was mostly a logging town (1,500 people and five sawmills) and driving to school in the pickup with your favorite rifle in the gun rack was commonplace. Occasionally we would all pile into the pickup during lunch and after a short drive we would set up our favorite targets, munch on lunch, and make it back in time for the next school period to start. Now living in "The Last Best Place", I take my grandkids out in my pickup on the weekends, and we target practice with their favorite rimfires - munch on lunch - while Pappy (aka Grandpa) looks fondly on, remembering days gone by.

I like my little town however when I read the paper I’m amazed at how many guys and gals are facing charges from drugs, assault, felonies and even kidnapping.

OMG
Take a look at the Flathead County jail.roster everyday you wanna see what's going on.

In 1969, my college buddy asked if I could come to Pennsylvania over Thanksgiving holiday to Pheasant n Deer hunt. I live in St. Louis. My parents bought me a RT ticket on TWA.
I had a scoped pre-64 Model 70 in 243 that I took. With rifle in a soft case I went to the ticket counter n they tagged it unloaded. They asked if I wanted it checked and I said no. Didn’t want it thrown into the baggage compt. Carried the rifle on the airplane n asked the Captain if he would put it in the cockpit with him. Sure he said, and I picked it up from him as I left the plane. Good hunting were his parting words.

Did you look today?
Not sure I have enough fingers and toes to count the ones on ICE retainers
17 were arrested 2 days ago, look how many are arrested on drug charges.
Start looking at were some come from.
From my count now 40 in the Flathead illegal immigrants arrested as of couple days ago, its not what it was before covid not even close.

3 years of covid seems about equal to 30 years of “progress” that I could have done without.
Depot park can offer a certain amount of entertainment on the weekend tho.

Grew Up in s. WI. We would jump shoot ducks in the morning
and then leave the guns on the car back seat , doors unlocked.
Couldn’t hunt after school because of football practice. The darn practice
field was out by a bend in the river and the woodies, teal and mallards
would cut the corner rite over us. Man I had a hard time
concentrating on football!

I’m in Kentucky but moving there sounds good!
You wouldn't be the first that had a desire to do that. The fact of the matter is that there are many people who buy here with the intent of living here full time. And many of them leave after a winter or two. I run into lots of people in the summer around Yellowstone that are here on vacation, in the summer. You know, when it's cool in the morning and low humidity, with the beauty of all the natural wonders that are nearby. Lots of them have thoughts of moving here. I show them the image included below and tell them it keeps the riff raff out of Montana. If that doesn't convince them I tell them to look at real estate prices. That is the clincher.

Yes Sir! Well aware of the harsh realities of Winters out there. I’ve visited my BIL in Eagle, ID, a few times, summer visits to the Sawtooths at Stanley, and another to McCall.
Drove from Boise to Yellowstone for an 8 day excursion through the most beautiful vistas in this world. Skiing at Medicine Bow/Snowy Range WY in mid January was the education where I realized I’m not hardy enough to endure a prolonged stay in such an environment. Grew up in western Europe where snow was usually on the ground from late October/early November until March, and I mean feet, not inches. My disdain for that again overrules any illusion I might be able to bear the 10+ feet that Stanley sees most years.
KY has it’s share of snow/ice, and even it tests my tolerance as I get older.
