One of those days at the range...

Long sigh..... I went to the range yesterday to try some new loads in my .243, I had loaded up some 68 gr. Bergers to try for a short range load, and some 95gr. Berger VLD's that I have been playing with for a couple of weeks.

It looked fine when I left home but by the time we got to the range the wind had picked up and although only 12-13 mph it was actually quite gusty, annoying but what the heck it was an otherwise lovely day. If you have shot at American in Houston you;ll know their benches really aren't set up for accuracy shooting, all wod construction, not really very heavy, and two benches connected to each other with a plywood partition between the shooters.

After getting targets set, ammo laid out, front rest in position, another guy sets up on the bench connected to mine. The first session shooting the 68's I would have two shots touching, with the 47 and 47.5 grain loads actually in just one small hole, then my bench mate would decide he needed to move around just as I touched off the 3rd shot and off it would go 1/2" or so to one side.

In the next session I broke out the 95 gr. Bergers to try, I had been getting the groups down in the .3's previously and spent a lot of time on these reloads making sure they were as precise as possible in .2 gr. increments to see what it liked best. Then my benchmate decided to bring out his .300 Remington Ultramag with a muzzle break. I should have just packed up then and went home.

On the other hand, you did get to go shooting.. 8)

Some off us dont have that luxary at this time fo the yr... ;)

Better luck next time.

Do they only have 2 benches or are there other pairs? If not I would find a new club or get ahold of the powers to be and tell them how lousy their table design is and offer to help them fix them and reinforce them to stabilize the table.Just a thought.I have done it before without asking.Never got in trouble.LOL

Unfortunately it's not a club, a public range. And I do feel fortunate just to be able to go this time of the year and wear short sleeve shirts.

Been there- used to shoot at a public range in WY and every now and then someone would show up with a breaked 300 RUM, 338 Lapua or even a 50 and not have the courtesy to give the rest of us a heads up.

Browningguy,
I guess I am lucky, I have my own range and loading room attached about 50 yards from my living room couch so if conditions change from the couch to the range I pack up and walk all the way back unless I feel lazy then I take the Kabota side by side LOL! anyway I would not have wasted the ammo if I were you, the wind you could time gusts, watch flags, or just see how well they do on a windy day of hunting, actually a good test for you and load in the wind, but the guy next to you is unexceptionable, I would have went prone, went home or got real rude real fast! Ammo is to spendy and more important your time is to valuable to waste. I just cant tolerate rudeness in a man, I wonder why when he seen you shooting and saw the bad situation with the benches he didn't wait or ask you if taking turns between putting up targets would be okay ??? anyway sounds like it shot pretty well considering.

LOL, Wayne, on the first half of your post. (and very much agree on the second half of the post.)
I just had to look and see where your shooting range was. Anywhere near Pullman? Great town. I televised several Cougar football games there before retiring.

Nomad47,
I live about 75 miles to the south of Pullman, about 13 miles south of Anatone in the very S.E corner of the state, where Oregon,Idaho, and Washington all meet up :)
